How To Use Your Hilton Credits

Every time the calendar is about to turn to a new quarter we see panic and madness in the Travel on Point(s) Facebook group. Dozens upon dozens of posts per day, all with members panicking over a credit we didn't even have a year ago. In fact, this probably wasn't even a part of your thought process when you were analyzing the coupon book that is the Business Platinum or one of the Hilton credit cards. It has even surpassed the panic level of the Dell credits we see every 6 months. Because of that, I wanted to put together a quick guide on how to use your Hilton credits.

A Hilton Stay

I know this seems crazy, but you can actually go stay at a Hilton and pay cash. Gasp! When using your Hilton credits it may even make sense to plan a staycation if you have no upcoming stays on your calendar. That $50 statement credit could get you a nice discount on a low-cost property stay. If you have a family, the kids will love some pool time at your local Hilton after all. You can even use the credits for property charges on award stays if you so choose. If you have to deal with specific resort credits from the Hilton Aspire, then we have you covered there as well.

For those that like to do the timeshare offers that we cover often, ToP Facebook group members have reported that paying for Hilton Grand Vacations packages triggers the credit too.

If you find yourself really up against it, you may be able to pre-pay a future hotel stay by calling the property. Some have been able to prepay their folio so they have a credit to work with on a future stay as well. This works best for very high end properties. I recently did this for Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal. They allow you to pre-pay up to 21 days prior and with two different cards.

If you have multiple cards then you can try to split tender the payment for the room rate or room charges. Your success with this will be highly property dependent. You will likely have better luck happening at true resorts. It is also best to pay down your folio balance at the front desk during non-busy times ahead of checkout.

How To Use Your Hilton Credits

Hilton Dining

Sometimes you can make a purchase at a Hilton hotel restaurant or Starbucks and it will use your Hilton credit. That is true even when you are not staying on the property. We are never going to be able to know if your small-town Doubletree will work, but we have dozens of data points in the group with hotels where this has worked. This is the riskiest of the dining options, because you have no recourse if your Hilton credits don't post properly (terms require it to be billed to your room). That means that you will want to use it for something you were going to pay for anyway, like dinner or drinks.

If your Hilton doesn't have either of these, it may have a snack bar near the front desk. Similar to how what you buy at a grocery store codes as grocery (even if it's not groceries), the same thought process applies here. If the front desk rings it up it should code properly at most properties. I would think long and hard about how much effort this takes depending on how close your Hilton hotels are. However, plenty of us travel all year long, which will likely put you near a Hilton often. You can load up on snacks for yourself or the family when that is the case.

Hilton Gift Cards

This is a thing of the past so no need to worry about it anymore. For those of us, still sitting on gift cards, I wish you the best of luck as they can be difficult to redeem. You may be able to push back on Hilton and get cash for those gift cards that do not work.

How To Use Your Hilton Credits: ToP Thoughts

Many of us in the hobby let these card benefits and perks control our lives and send us into a panic. At the end of the day, when it comes to these Hilton credits, we are talking about $50 that you didn't have less than a year ago. Having a plan is great and may help, but there is no need to go into a panic over this credit. As with many things, these credits outside of an actual stay will be a your mileage may vary situation. What works for one may not work for another.
