Best Time To Use Hilton Credits
When is the best time to use Hilton Credits that come on various American Express cards? While I have written about Hilton credits and ways to use them in the past, there is some magic to the timing. Personally, I like to leverage a method that allows you to maximize the credits from different quarters (or semiannual periods) all during one stay.

Which Cards Offer Credits
American Express offers these credits through several Hilton co-branded cards and one non-co-branded card. There are some slight variations in the terms, so let's break them down.
Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card: $200 in statement credits semiannually (January through June; and July through December) for up to $400 back annually for eligible purchases made. The credit can only be applied at specific resorts, which we cover here.
Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card: up to a total of $50 in statement credits each calendar quarter (January through March; April through June; July through September; and October through December), for up to $200 back annually for eligible purchases charged directly with a property within the Hilton portfolio on their Card Account, including for bookings and incidental charges.
Hilton Honors American Express Business Card:: Receive up to a total of $60 in statement credits each calendar quarter (January through March; April through June; July through September; and October through December) for up to $240 back annually, for eligible purchases charged directly with a property within the Hilton portfolio on their card account, including for bookings and incidental charges.
American Express Business Platinum: Receive up to $50 in statement credits per quarter for a total of up to $200 per calendar year in statement credits across all cards on the enrolled account. (Each quarterly eligibility period is defined as January to March; April to June; July to September; and October to December.) This one requires you to create a Hilton business account, as well.
Uses for Hilton Credits
There are many uses for these Hilton credits (except the Aspire, which is resort-specific). A few options:
- Hilton cash stays
- Dining at Hilton properties. This is YMMV (your mileage may vary) if you're not staying at the actual property.
- Starbucks that are part of a Hilton. This is YMMV if you're not staying at the actual property.
- Timeshare presentation packages. We have covered these on the blog frequently, and I have shared what it is like to attend one as well. Paying for one of these should trigger any of your credits.
- Prepay for Hilton stays
- Prepay for incidentals or services

How I Use These Credits
I want to focus on the last reasons listed: prepaying for Hilton stays. While this may require some effort, it can pay off in a big way. Every resort is different, so you will need to reach out to the resorts. Here's how:
- Step 1: Find a resort from the Aspire eligible list you want to stay at.
- Step 2: Reach out to see if they allow prepayment for stays and what their rules are.
- Step 3: Book a stay for either early January or early July if you have an Aspire card. Why then? This will be a way to use the $200 Hilton Aspire Credit and stack it (keep reading!) depending on their rules. If you only have the other cards, you can adjust your dates and potentially the hotel.
- Step 4: Once you are within those rules timelines, you will prepay the amount listed.
ToP Tip: I find that resorts are a little more accustomed to these requests and willing to facilitate them vs. a random small Hampton Inn, for example. That being said, try and find those data points where you can consistently maximize your credits.

My Example:
I booked Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal for early January. The first 20 days of the month are a sweet spot for maximizing your credits because of the resort's prepayment policy. This resort allows you to prepay with up to two cards, up to 21 days in advance. When you reach out via email, a representative will ask for the amount of the desired charge on each card and then send you a link to upload your credit card information securely. I prepaid $200 on my Aspire card and $50 on my Business Platinum in December. This took advantage of two of my 2025 credits (the Aspire resort credit from July to December and the Business Platinum credit for Q4).
Then when I checked-in for my January stay, I used my Hilton Aspire to use my first 2026 credit, which is good January to June. The resort is also great about split payments at checkout. Because of this, I used my Business Platinum and Hilton Surpass cards at checkout. The breakdown of the Hilton credits for one stay was as follows:
| 2025 July-December Hilton Aspire credit prepay | $200 |
| 2025 Q4 Business Platinum credit prepay | $50 |
| 2026 January-June Hilton Aspire credit at the resort | $200 |
| 2026 Q1 Business Platinum credit at the resort | $50 |
| 2026 Q1 Hilton Surpass credit at resort | $50 |
In total, I used $550 in credits for my stay. While that may sound like a lot, I can tell you from my many stays that it does not last long! But, it will give you a couple nice dinners or a great pool day and some food. I could do this for early July as well, since that's when the biannual Aspire credit resets.

Best time to use Hilton credits: ToP Thoughts
Hilton credits can be pesky and cause a headache for some. I still think staying at a Hilton is the best way to use these credits. If you have Hilton cards, you should at least have a couple Hilton stays planned in the future. Prepaying for a stay at an eligible resort can be the best way to use Hilton credits with just one stay. How do you use your credits? Come over to our Facebook group and let us know.
