Using Delta Stays Credits
In the ever-changing world of points and miles, the banks are making credit cards more like coupon books full of various credits. To maximize value, you must use credits to offset the annual fee and perhaps justify keeping the card. We break down how to use Delta Stays credits and offer tips to add to your success if you choose to use them.

What Are Delta Stays Credits
Delta Stays is the Delta version of a third-party portal. You can book hotels, rental cars, and vacations to earn Delta SkyMiles. You can also use SkyMiles to redeem, but this is not something I recommend with most at just 0.6 cents per point. Even given the poor nickname of “sky pesos” which I disagree with, I would not use SkyMiles for this as you can get double (or more) this value on flights. I personally don't use my SkyMiles for less than 1.2 cents each.
We have given many warnings about travel portals, so it is worth knowing what you are getting into. That being said, at some point, you have to decide whether or not to use that credit. Additionally, this is another reminder for those under 5/24 to skip the Delta personal cards. Finally, if you are trying to decide on a certain card, Mark breaks them down when offers are elevated.

How to Book Delta Stays
First, start at the Delta Stays website here.

Like any third-party, site you search for where you want to book. I find the site easy to use with many ways to filter stays. My only critique is that there are so many hotels to choose from, it can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you do not use the filters.

It will show you the price as well as the SkyMiles and Medallion Qualifying Miles you will earn (if applicable). I would not rely on the reviews here. I always go into these searches with an open mind, especially for non-branded hotels. But so far, the reviews seem better than the hotel actually is. I like to check Trip Advisor for the recent pictures and identify any possible issues.

Next, you should check terms and conditions closely. These are not bookings you want to mess around with and have a high liklihood of changing or cancelling the stay. That is a recipe for disaster. Even more so when credits are involved that could get clawed back. Finally, make sure you are paying for the stay now. Use the “Pay Now” option so your card is charged immediately and you can earn the statement credit.

Delta Stays Credits Timing & Earning
I have used multiple credits so far and the timing has been fast and accurate. I typically receive an email confirming that I am getting a credit. All of my stays have then been credited within 72 hours, some as quick as 24 hours. Another good reminder is that this is spend on your card, since it is a statement credit. This will count towards any welcome offers or spending offers you are working on.

It is important to remember that with anything American Express related, credits can go through periods of severe delays. That being said, I have not experienced that yet with this particular credit.

As mentioned previously, you will also earn SkyMiles on the transaction. So in this case, I had a $152 stay (before taxes/fees) and I earned 2x on the stay. These Delta miles posted quickly as well.
Tips For Delta Stays Credit
- Use these for one-night stays. My favorite use is when I need an airport stay or add on a day to an existing trip.
- Confirm with the hotel that they have your reservation before arrival.
- If you receive confirmation from the hotel, confirm all of the fine print. I recently stayed at a hotel with a resort fee that was not disclosed on Delta Stays.
Remember, this is a portal booking, so double- and triple-check everything!
Using Delta Stays Credits: ToP Thoughts
It is often a bit stressful using Delta Stays credits, especially given the potential for portal issues. So far, using them on easy one-night stays, I have been happy with the process. Earning a few extra SkyMiles, while getting a little more value out of my Delta Business card, has been just fine and easy to use. Have you been using Delta stays credits?
