New United Status Requirements

Incoming: More major United MileagePlus changes. Starting next year, United will eliminate Premier Qualifying Flight (PQF) requirements. Instead, status qualification will depend on Premier Qualifying Points (PQP). This means your status will be determined by how much you spend rather than how many flights you take. Those who hold eligible United credit cards will also get a head start toward future qualification. Earlier this year, United decimated its loyalty program for those who aren’t cardholders. And once again, the airline is centering its whole program around its co-branded credit cards. If you plan on chasing United status in 2027, here’s what to know about the new United status requirements.

Current Status Qualification Requirements

Through the end of 2026, members earn Premier elite status in one of two ways: a combo of Premier qualifying flights (PQF) and Premier qualifying points (PQP), or by meeting a higher PQP-only threshold. PQF are earned based on eligible flight segments, while PQP can be earned through qualifying spending on United flights, eligible partner flights and select United co-branded credit cards. These are the existing requirements, plus at least four segments on United or United Express during the qualification year.

New Requirements: What’s Changing in 2027

Beginning January 1, 2027, United aims to simplify its Premier qualification system by removing PQF requirements. Instead, members will qualify based on the number of PQP they earn through eligible flights and United credit card spending, with the following requirements:

Premier StatusNew PQP Requirement
Premier Silver6,000 PQP
Premier Gold12,000 PQP
Premier Platinum18,000 PQP
Premier 1K32,000 PQP

The thresholds for Premier Silver, Gold and Platinum match the current PQP-only requirements. However, Premier 1K members now face roughly a 14% higher spending threshold (increasing from 28,000 PQP to 32,000 PQP). Members will still need to complete at least four flights operated by United or United Express during 2027.

Those who have an eligible United card by December 31, 2026, and qualify for 2027 Premier status will get the following head start toward status:
