Upgrade With American Airlines Miles

American Airlines announced Thursday it is changing the way AAdvantage members can upgrade with American Airlines miles. Beginning August 12, 2025, American is getting rid of its mileage upgrade award chart, which told passengers exactly how many miles it would cost to upgrade a given flight. In its place, the airline is launching a new “Instant Upgrade” with miles feature. This will allow AAdvantage members to purchase an upgrade for their eligible flight with cash or miles anytime after booking, so long as space is available.

No More Mileage Upgrade Award Chart

As of August 12th American will no longer accept upgrade requests using its mileage upgrade award chart. That award chart had been a good way to upgrade economy tickets for as few as 5,000 AA miles each way.

American says you will still be able to submit upgrade requests for new and existing flights under the upgrade award chart pricing until August 11th. That is true as long as your trip is completed by December 31, 2025. If you need to change an existing reservation where you already have a confirmed mileage upgrade, you'll be able to do so until August 11th, provided travel under your new itinerary is complete before the end of the year. That is true regardless of when your original flight was.

American Launches Instant Upgrades

American is replacing the mileage upgrade award chart system with Instant Upgrades. The airline has been offering cash upgrades for some time now. For instance, in 2023, I was able to upgrade my flight from Santiago, Chile (SCL) to Dallas (DFW) from economy to a lie-flat business class suite for a little over $300. Now, that same upgrade offer will also be available for the equivalent price in AAdvantage miles.

Passengers can look up their flight reservation on the American Airlines website, or in the American app, up to 24 hours before departure to see whether they have an upgrade offer. If seats are available, you'll see the option to upgrade to a higher cabin either with miles or cash. Upgrades will be confirmed immediately.

United recently made a similar move in ditching its own upgrade award chart in favor of pricing its mileage upgrades more dynamically. Both airlines appear to be following in the footsteps of Delta Air Lines, which has already been targeting passengers with offers to upgrade in either cash or miles.

Upgrade With American Airlines Miles: ToP Thoughts

American's latest changes to its AAdvantage program opens up more, easier options for members to pay to upgrade their flights. That is a way to look at the positive side of things. The more negative slant is that American's now-defunct system for requesting mileage upgrade awards provided the opportunity to get good value for your AA miles.

Under the new instant upgrade system, mileage upgrade awards now tied to the cash upgrade price. So depending on the flight, your miles may not get you as much as they once did.
