Quicksilver Transitions to Discover

Emails are going out to current Capital One Quicksilver cardholders confirming the Quicksilver transitions to Discover network soon. This was only one of several changes announced to the card and brings both good and bad news. We break down these changes below and what it means for cardholders.

Current Quicksilver Card

The current Quicksilver card is a no-frills, simplistic 1.5% earn on all spend, akin to the Chase Freedom Unlimited or the Chase Ink Unlimited. If you have a Capital One miles card, you can easily covert the 1.5% cash back to Capital One Miles, making it a 1.5X earner on all spend. Historically, the card runs on the Mastercard network and it is a great option for a “set it and forget it” no annual fee card.

The Transition

While breaking the news that Quicksilver transitions to Discover network soon, Capital One also introduced new bonus categories for this no annual fee card. These new categories include:

  • unlimited 3% cash back at grocery stores;
  • unlimited 3% cash back at gas stations; and
  • unlimited 1.5% cash back on all other spend.

While you will continue to enjoy 1.5% earnings on all spend, these new changes include doubling earnings at both grocery stores and gas stations. That is an exciting development, especially to get unlimited 3% (or 3X when combining with another card) with no annual fee.

Quicksilver Transitions to Discover Network: ToP Thoughts

There is definitely both good news and bad news for card holders. The good news is that a no annual fee card is adding unlimited 3% categories for grocery and gas. That is simply incredible for a no annual fee card. The bad news is that this card is moving to the Discover network, which has far less uses, and less acceptance worldwide, than a Mastercard.
