Freedom Flex 10x Welcome Offer

There is a new Freedom Flex 10x welcome offer that could be of serious interest to those who can maximize it. This is a break from their normal two tiered offer on the Flex, where you get a points bonus and 5x earning in select categories for a year. Some may prefer those offers, which are still available. However, if you can maximize the 10x offer, it will give you a better overall return. Let's dive into the details.

Freedom Flex 10x Offer Details

Here are the terms of the offer:

  • Earn 10% (or 10x Ultimate Rewards) back on grocery store purchases (excluding Walmart and Target) on up to $12,000 in spend in the first year.
  • No annual fee

There is no up front points welcome offer like in the past. Also, remember that each time you earn 10x on grocery purchases it will reset your 24 month clock from that point because of the way this offer is set up.

Where To Find This Offer

The Freedom Flex 10x offer isn't on Chase's site, or available via personal referrals. Well, it isn't available on Chase's site for everyone. People have been able to have this come up when searching for the card on a clean browser. They also have had better luck on a mobile device versus a computer. If at first you don't succeed then try, try again (much like the Amex Business Platinum 300K offer).

How To Turn Your Cashback Into Ultimate Rewards

While you can earn cash back with the Chase Freedom Flex, you can also use your points for travel.  This is even more valuable if you have one of the following premium Chase cards:

That is because the Chase Freedom Flex is a part of the Chase Ultimate Rewards program allowing you to transfer points between all of your accounts.  Once your points are in an Ultimate Rewards earning account (one of the three cards listed above), you can transfer points 1:1 to a variety of airline and hotel partners.

Freedom Flex Earning Structure

The Chase Freedom Flex has the following earning structure:

  • 5% (5x) on travel through the Chase travel portal
  • 5% (5x) on different categories each quarter on up to $1,500 in spend each quarter
  • 3% (3x) on dining inclusive of takeout and delivery
  • 3% (3x) on drugstore purchases
  • 1% (1x) on all other eligible purchases

How Does This Compare To The $200 Plus 5x Offer?

Which offer is better? This 10x Chase Freedom Flex offer, or the 20,000 points and 5x back offer?

Bonus Points & 5x Back Offer

Here is the max earning from this offer, after $12,000 in grocery purchases:

  • 20,000 points from the welcome offer
  • 60,000 points from 5x earning on $12k in spend
  • 80,000 total points
10x Offer

Here is the max earning from this offer, after $12,000 in grocery purchases:

  • 120,000 points from 10x earning on $12K in spend
The Tipping Point Between The Two

What if you know that you can't maximize $12,000 in grocery spend, which one should you grab. That depends on how much your grocery budget is every month. With the $200 bonus, plus 5x offer, you get a head start, but you would be earning 5x less on every grocery purchase.

  • 20,000 points / 5x less in earning = $4,000 in spend

If you spend $4,000 or less on groceries a year then the 20k points plus 5x earning is the better offer for you. If you spend less than that on groceries every year you should probably focus on other welcome offers anyway.

Freedom Flex 10x Welcome Offer: ToP Thoughts

This Freedom Flex 10x welcome offer is pretty dang good, if you can maximize its potential that is. If you can maximize it, then you would net 120,000 Ultimate Rewards (once you convert the cash back). That is a pretty compelling total right there. I think the 10x offer is better for most everyone. To be honest, if it isn't the better option for you, then I wouldn't grab either offer. If you are spending that small of an amount at the grocery store then you should be focusing on other offers, like the increased Sapphire Preferred offer.
