Chase Sapphire Preferred Upgrade Offer
Following the overhaul and refresh of the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card, the Chase Social Media team hinted at a Chase Sapphire Preferred upgrade offer to the Chase Sapphire Reserve. Sure enough, some folks are now targeted for these offers. But before you accept that offer, let's go through why the offer doesn't make sense for most.

ToggleState of Sapphire Card Eligibility
Earlier this year, Chase ended the 48 month rule for Sapphire card eligibility. As it currently stands, you may not be eligible for a card's signup bonus if you have, have had, and/or have earned a signup bonus on that particular card. While this is certainly a negative change from the old rule, the silver lining is that you are eligible for the signup bonus on both a Chase Sapphire Preferred card and a Chase Sapphire Reserve card as soon as you no longer hold any card in that family. With a bit of strategy, that can occur as quickly as 13 months apart. Because of this, the Sapphire Preferred upgrade offer does not make sense for most folks.
Current Chase Sapphire Preferred Upgrade Offer
The targeted Sapphire Preferred upgrade offers are arriving via email. The terms of the offer are as follows:
- Earn 25,000 Ultimate Rewards when you upgrade your Preferred card to a Reserve card by January 31, 2026 and spend $3,000 or more by February 14, 2026.

Why Most, But Not All, Should Ignore this Offer
At first glance, the CSP upgrade offers for 25,000 Ultimate Rewards looks like a good deal. After all, December is a great time to open cards for the calendar year benefits and a triple dip. If you upgraded to a CSR now, you could use a $300 hotel credit, a $150 dining credit and more in December 2025, before those all reset in 2026.
While that sounds awesome, it still doesn't make sense for most. Why? Because you can downgrade your Sapphire Preferred, wait about 2 weeks, and apply outright for a new CSR. That earns you 5x the amount of points of this upgrade offer AND gets you a no annual fee 5x earner.
So should anyone consider this offer? If you have previously held the Sapphire Reserve, you might want to consider this Sapphire Preferred upgrade offer for 25,000 points. However, since the eligibility language is “you may not be eligible” for a new card signup bonus if you have held the card before, know that you are giving up the possibility of completing the downgrade & reapplication process described above and not getting the pop-up that you are ineligible. So if you find yourself in this situation, is it worth taking 25,000 Ultimate Rewards to forego the possibility of a new card signup bonus worth 5x that amount? Only you can decide that one!

It is interesting to see Chase send out targeted Sapphire Preferred upgrade offers to change to a Sapphire Reserve. While the 25,000 Ultimate Rewards bonus sounds nice, it doesn't make sense for most. How about you? Were you targeted? Are you accepting the offer? Come over to the Facebook group and let us know.
