Chase Trip Delay & Cancellation Insurance Guide

You're at the gate and get the dreaded announcement. “Sorry folks, we have a maintenance delay and don't know when we will be able to depart.” Panic sets in, everyone crowds the gate agent, and the boarding area is chaos. You know you'll miss your connection and have to spend the night in Houston. But you keep your cool, because you saved these reference guides to your phone. You confirmed your Chase insurance covers it, so you head to Starbucks and grab a coffee, and order lunch and beers at the airport restaurant. While relaxing, you reserve a decent airport hotel instead of waiting to see what fleabag motel the airline offers you. Your spouse swoons because you knew what to do and saved the day. This is exactly what this Chase trip delay & cancellation insurance guide will help you pull off.

Knowledge Is Power – And It's In Your Pocket

This article is part one of four for Chase credit card protections and insurance coverage. The purpose of this post is to give you several easy-to-read guides for premium Chase credit card insurance. It has been optimized for viewing on a smartphone without scrolling and searching. With this trip delay & cancellation insurance guide you will find the answer to “does my card cover that?” quickly and painlessly. You will still want to refer to your card's guide to benefits for full details when needed.

Chase switched insurance providers from eclaimsline to Assurant in October 2024, so make sure you get the more current guide to benefits when looking online. Most coverage remain the same, but there are some minor changes. Bear in mind that these infographics are for quick reference, and Chase can change this insurance at any time.

Is This Stackable With Other Forms Of Reimbursement?

The answer to that question is yes and no. Chase insurance is secondary to other forms of compensation in certain situations. For example, if you stay in a hotel the airline booked you in (and paid for), you can't claim that expense on your Chase insurance. That doesn't mean you have to accept a crappy hotel the airline offers to put you up in. If you do accept compensation from a common carrier, you can use Chase's insurance for certain expenses that aren't covered. Check out Mark's article on how to claim EU261 compensation for an example of entitlements with European carriers.

Cards That Offer This Coverage

Here are the credit cards that we will be covering in this Chase premium card trip delay & cancellation insurance guide (also included in the savable image below):

The perks could vary slightly between these cards at certain times. The time needed for coverage to kick in is one such example. All of that is explained in the cheat sheet card below though. Just be sure to read it carefully when going through the details for your particular card.

Trip Delay Coverage

The above scenario wasn't a hypothetical…it happened to my family on a trip to Costa Rica. There was no other way to get to Houston on time to catch our connecting flight to Liberia, so our trip delay insurance kicked in. Ok, maybe my wife didn't swoon as we waited out the delay. But she surely appreciated free meals and a decent hotel. Knowing we would be stuck in Houston, I booked the Doubletree and skipped the customer service line at IAH. I DoorDashed dinner, toiletries, diapers, and a few other miscellaneous things we needed…and I knew it would all be reimbursable via Chase's trip delay insurance. While we would have preferred to get to our destination on time, we were able to pivot without too much of a disruption. And with little kids, that was a huge win.
