Amex Downgrade Bonus Offers

Last week I shared a data point that I thought would be super unique. A data point that I had never experienced, and have never seen reported before. It appears that I am not so special after all (although my mom would disagree with this statement). After I posted about my Delta Reserve to Delta Blue down grade bonus offer we received a few more data points. The best part? They weren't for Delta cards either. It appears there are Amex downgrade bonus offers on a few other cards going around right now too.

Offer Details

I'll share the details of the Amex downgrade bonus offer on my Delta Reserve card, in case you missed it, and then throw a couple more reported from the ToP Facebook Group in there. Let me know if you have had one recently as well. I'll be sure to add in any new data points as they come up.

  • Delta Reserve to Delta Blue downgrade offer
    • Earn 10,000 bonus Delta Skymiles after you spend $2,500 or more on purchases on your Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card account
    • The spend must be completed within 6 months of accepting the offer
  • Amex Platinum to Amex Gold downgrade offer
    • Earn 25,000 Membership Rewards after you spend $2,000 in three months
  • Amex Platinum to Amex Green downgrade offer
    • Earn 15,000 Membership Rewards after you spend $1,000 in three months

It may be possible to get the offer on a Amex Business Platinum to Amex Business Gold card downgrade too. It is interesting to see these offers on all of their most premium cards in each family type. Does that mean that there may be something offered for an Amex Hilton Aspire or Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card? Possibly. I would definitely inquire if you have a top tier card you were planning on closing, and don't receive a retention bonus offer.

One Word Of Caution

My one caveat with Amex downgrade bonus offers would be if you have never had the card before. At that point you may not want to downgrade into a card you have never held before. That is because carrying an Amex card makes you ineligible for the bonus for 5-7 years. It is tied to actually holding the card versus earning a welcome offer. That may not even matter depending on the card's family rules though. Holding the highest level card in a family may negate you getting a welcome offer on a lower card already anyway.

Amex Downgrade Bonus Offers: ToP Thoughts

I love seeing these new Amex downgrade bonus offers. It would make sense to entice a current cardholder to keep open their account, even if with a lower tier product. It also makes sense that the offers would be a little lower than a standard retention offer. You are likely shaving several hundred dollars off an annual fee with these downgrades after all.

Let me know if you see a downgrade offer on any of your cards going forward. You can share them in the ToP Facebook Group and I will be sure to add them to our list of data points.
