Hyatt Award Chart Changes 2024

It is the end of February, which means it is Hyatt award chart changes 2024 time. This is always the worst part of my least favorite month of the year. Sorry February babies, but in the North, February is brutal. Not as brutal as these Hyatt award chart changes though…hey-o! I remember a time, not too long ago actually, when these award chart changes were somewhat reasonable. A time where almost as many properties would go down as up. Sure, you lost sweet spots every year, but they were called sweet spots for a reason after all. It feels like instead of devaluing World of Hyatt points up front it is done with these more sly category change devaluations. Just think of how much more valuable a category 1-4 free night cert was 5 years ago, and how many more properties were bookable with it back then. I guess it shouldn't be too surprising with how high cash prices remain. Enough of me pining for the old days already, let's get into this thing.

3/25/24 Update: Last chance to book the hotels increasing in price at the lower rate. The changes happen 3/26/24.

Here is a breakdown of the properties. Going down in category will be coded in green and increasing in cost will be colored in red for each chart. The color coordination really shows the scope of how bad this is in my opinion.

Pluses & Minuses With United States Category Changes

That is sure a lot of red, isn't it? For the good side of things I think the Hyatt Regency Tahoe dropping to a category 5 is a nice change. I know that people have really enjoyed that property over the years. There was some nice movement in San Francisco too, but that could be because it is a bit less of a desirable destination now compared to years passed. The Tommie in LA looks like a nice hotel, so I am surprised to see that one drop. The Hyatt Carmel Highlands is another positive move worth mentioning.

For the increases on the other hand, so many choices! The Thompson Chicago is a huge one for me personally. That was my favorite free night certificate location in the US. I will have to make a few speculative bookings there before the March deadline. With the other options in Chicago I just don't see the value anymore at 20K a night. Washington DC got absolutely pulverized with these changes as well. A lot of the good category 4 options in the area are no longer bookable with a free night certificate.

I don't have much to add here, since it is all there in red and green. Not a ton of changes to the area overall, but that could be more due to Hyatt's coverage of the area. I don't know anything about the Hyatt Regency Cape Town, but that could be an interesting Category 1 hotel option.

Well, China certainly got a bit cheaper overall. India, on the other hand, went the other way with increases across the board. The Hyatt Regency Bangkok is one that will hit some people hard with its great location in the city. I am surprised to see the Grand Hyatt Tokyo going up as well. It doesn't sound like that is on par with the Park Hyatt Tokyo, which is also a category 7. The Park Hyatt Auckland is another hit to people as a beloved property (a favorite of Sarah's).

Pluses & Minuses Of Canada, Caribbean & Latin America Category Changes

I can't sugar coat this one, it is all bad. Hyatt has proven that they intend to pump up the cost of all inclusive properties for a few years now. When World of Hyatt first got into the all inclusive arena they offered a ton of value. The value is getting tougher and tougher to see now. Especially when bookings are limited to two people before fees etc. For example, charging 50K for the Ziva Cancun is just crazy talk. Especially when it was only 25K a night just a few years ago. Doubling the price of a property in a blink of an eye is a kick in the teeth. At least one Secrets property dropped a category I guess…

Pluses & Minuses Of Europe Category Changes

Ladies & gentlemen, I keep trying to find a silver lining here and there, but I just can't pull it off. There isn't much to like with these Europe changes. World of Hyatt can be sparce in much of Europe already, which hopefully their recent acquisition will improve upon, so this drops Hyatt points' usefulness in Europe a bit lower. Seeing the all inclusive properties increase is par for the course, until you realize that Europe all inclusive resorts are not true all inclusive resorts. At least not in the sense we are used to in Mexico etc.

Hyatt Award Chart Changes 2024: ToP Thoughts

There is no denying it, these Hyatt award chart changes 2024 are a devaluation. The amount of increases far outweigh the amount of decreases. That is true in terms of scope and in terms of value. The all inclusive scene in Mexico, Dominican Republic & Jamaica got hammered so hard I don't even know if they are worth booking anymore. The Thompson Madrid has gone from a Category 4 to a Category 6 in under two years, another huge blow. The Thompson Chicago going from a 4 to 5 is a hard hit to Midwest travelers with free night certificates too.

I think the US market saw the most positive changes, which isn't saying much. There are at least a couple that you could hang your hat on. The other markets simply offer nothing of note that I can see at first glance. There are only 3 properties outside of the US that became Category 1-4 certificate bookable and 11 that are no longer are an option. That is just not good enough. Hyatt needs to add the ability to top off these certificates before they become only useful for Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels.
