Amex Business Gold Retention Offer

I really planned on keeping my Amex Business Gold card another year, especially with the recent changes. I figured getting $240 in credits for a $295 annual fee is pretty great if I could get a semi decent welcome offer with it. That would give me another year of some potential 4x earning too. Our no lifetime language offers have pretty much dried up for the Business Gold card so this was the next best thing. Maybe that will change next year when the annual fee increases though. We had two cards up for renewal so I figured we would get one good Amex Business Gold retention offer. That was not the case, as we got two dusty offers instead.

Details Of Our Two Amex Business Gold Retention Offer

Here are the two Amex Business Gold retention offers that we saw:

  • Earn 10,000 Membership Rewards after spending $4,000 within 3 months
  • Earn 10,000 Membership Rewards after spending $5,000 within 3 months

We would get the $295 annual fee for one more year, since that doesn't change until 2/1/23.

Why This Is A “Dusty” Offer

I was looking for any reason to keep one of these cards. With the annual fee being mostly covered by the new credits I was willing to take some free(ish) and easy points. If they would have come at me with 20,000 points or more I would have kept it. At 10,000 points, plus the monthly credits, it is basically a wash for the annual fee since I don't value them at the full $20 each month. I may have been willing to accept break even for another year of 4x earning, but with them clawing back some of those purchase earnings I am not willing to put the effort into it.

The real kicker in my decision making process is that I can do better via a referral from my wife anyway. She has some cards offering her 20,000 or 25,000 points and that doesn't require any spend. Even knowing I wouldn't get a welcome offer by signing up for the card it is still the better option. Especially when you consider it is a business card so there is no 5/24 count to worry about. Throw in the fact that American Express usually doesn't do a hard pull for current cardholders and I don't have to give up much of anything. The last consideration would be potentially getting sent to Amex pop-up jail, but I have been living that life for a while already. So I don't even need to worry about that.

Amex Business Gold Retention Offer: ToP Thoughts

Even though I really wanted to have a reason to keep the card another year, my Amex Business Gold retention just wasn't good enough. When it is a business card under consideration the offer needs to beat what I could give from a personal referral from my wife to really consider it.

It doesn't seem like our offers were unique either. Most of the data points I have seen in the ToP Facebook Group have been for similar “dusty” offers. Would you have done anything differently? Let me know over in the Facebook group.
