American Airlines Starlux Codeshare
The new American Airlines Starlux codeshare is expected to launch as early as September 30, 2026, based on current schedule filings. The reciprocal agreement will make it easier to book connecting itineraries between cities across the U.S., Taiwan and destinations throughout Asia. The partnership creates more connectivity, but there is one important limitation for points and miles travelers: American and Starlux have not announced reciprocal mileage earning, award redemptions or elite benefits. Is it possible we'll eventually be able to redeem AAdvantage miles for Starlux? Let's take a look.
What Is the American Airlines and Starlux Codeshare?
American and Taiwan-based Starlux first launched an interline agreement in 2025. That agreement allowed travelers to book flights operated by both airlines on one ticket and check bags through to their final destination on eligible itineraries. The new American Airlines Starlux codeshare takes the partnership one step further. American will be able to place its flight number on select Starlux-operated flights, while Starlux will be able to add its flight number to select American-operated flights. This should make connecting itineraries easier to find and book. But it does not automatically include AAdvantage benefits. Starlux is not yet a oneworld member, either.
American Airlines and Starlux Codeshare Routes
American plans to place its code on four Starlux routes between Taipei Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) and the U.S.:
- Los Angeles (LAX)
- Ontario, California (ONT)
- San Francisco (SFO)
- Seattle (SEA)
In the other direction, Starlux will place its code on 26 American-operated domestic routes, including 10 from Los Angeles and 16 from Phoenix (PHX). One notable route is missing from the initial agreement. American is not currently expected to place its code on Starlux’s nonstop flight between Phoenix and Taipei, even though Starlux will codeshare on American feeder flights from Phoenix. The American Airlines Starlux codeshare is expected to begin as early as September 30, 2026. Routes and launch dates could still change before tickets go on sale.
Why the American Airlines Starlux Codeshare Matters
Starlux currently serves a small number of U.S. gateways. Adding American’s domestic network can make the airline more accessible to travelers who do not live near one of those airports. The agreement may be especially useful for travelers who:
- Want to book American and Starlux flights on one itinerary
- Need a domestic connection to a Starlux gateway
- Want to check bags through to their final destination on an eligible ticket
- Plan to connect through Taipei to another destination in Asia
- Prefer the protections of a single ticket instead of separate reservations
A single-ticket itinerary can also help during irregular operations. If a delay causes a missed protected connection, the airlines can work to rebook the affected trip. We do like positioning flights, but they can create additional risk. Not leaving yourself enough buffer to account for possible delays is one of the biggest possible award booking mistakes. Travelers should still confirm check-in, baggage and seat-selection procedures because the marketing and operating airlines may handle different parts of the reservation.
Does This Mean You Can Redeem AAdvantage Miles for Starlux?
Not yet. Although several American Airlines personal credit cards provide ways to earn AAdvantage miles, American has not announced the ability to redeem those miles for Starlux flights. The airlines also have not announced reciprocal mileage earning, Loyalty Point earning, elite status benefits or lounge access. A codeshare is a commercial agreement, not necessarily a loyalty partnership. Even if a Starlux-operated flight displays an American flight number, travelers should not assume it qualifies for AAdvantage earnings or American elite benefits. Always check the operating carrier, marketing carrier, fare class and current earning rules before booking. We'll have to wait and see if the American Airlines Starlux codeshare leads to anything more.
For now, Alaska Airlines’ Atmos Rewards still remains the primary U.S. loyalty program for booking Starlux awards. Alaska and Starlux have a deeper partnership that allows members to earn and redeem points on eligible flights. Award availability can be limited, especially in premium cabins, so confirm the space before purchasing or moving any points. Here are our tips and tricks for booking Starlux. Could an AAdvantage Partnership Be Next?
A reciprocal loyalty partnership would be a logical next step after the American Airlines Starlux codeshare. But nothing has been announced. If American eventually adds Starlux as an AAdvantage partner, members could gain another option for reaching Taiwan and connecting throughout Asia. Additional partners can also create more creative routing opportunities, like this unique points and miles booking to Asia.
Starlux has also expressed interest in joining the oneworld alliance. Taiwan’s other major full-service airlines already belong to competing alliances: EVA Air is a Star Alliance member, while China Airlines belongs to SkyTeam. Even without joining oneworld, Starlux could still form a separate loyalty partnership with American. Until either airline announces more, any AAdvantage redemptions or reciprocal elite benefits remain speculation.
American Airlines Starlux Codeshare: ToP Thoughts
The new American Airlines Starlux codeshare creates more options for travelers heading to Taiwan and beyond. Combining Starlux’s transpacific service with American’s domestic network should make trips easier to book and manage, especially for travelers who need a positioning flight to reach a Starlux gateway. For points and miles travelers, though, the biggest potential benefit has not arrived yet. The codeshare does not currently allow AAdvantage redemptions on Starlux or provide reciprocal elite benefits. Hopefully, this is the first step toward a deeper loyalty partnership.
