American Airlines Platinum Pro Status Challenge
I have been doing an American Airlines Platinum Pro status challenge since last August. Originally, I was not sure if I would partake, but after grabbing the Citi AAdvantage Business card it just kind of happened. Once I met the required minimum spend for the welcome offer it seemed like I should continue down this path. I believe my status match / challenge was from their World of Hyatt partnership. Anyway, fast forward to a few months ago and American Airlines tried to completely screw me out of my earned status.
Timing Was Not My Friend
The American Airlines status challenges are usually done in phases that last four months each. You need to earn a certain level of loyalty points to continue on with the challenge into the next phase. Once you complete all three phases you get to keep the status earned until the next loyalty year ends. You can find offers like these in your AAdvantage account under the promotions section.
For American Airlines the end of the year is February 28th. That is where the crux of my issue was. See, American Airlines takes their sweet time figuring out where your loyalty points should go starting in March. If you have a credit card statement cut that has charges in February and March then you are in for a frustrating experience. Because it can take WEEKS for them to figure out what goes where. You would think that in 2025 this would be a pretty automated task, but I guess not.
I needed to earn 14,000 more Loyalty Points before my March statement finished on the 19th. To be honest, I didn't think the normal American Airlines end of the status year hijinks would play a role in my status challenge. Why would it matter which year the Loyalty points went to anyway? Well, it did! They worked like a sloth at the DMV to get through my AAdvantage account. Because of that they didn't add the loyalty points to my account until AFTER the April 5th cut off date for my second phase of the status match.

Reaching Out Produced Nothing Useful
After checking my account every day for two weeks, waiting for my Loyalty Points to update on the challenge, I was met with despair on April 5th. My promotions page said that my challenge was done, because I had failed to meet the requirement for phase 2. I knew that this was bull honky, so I decided to file a complaint on the website about it.
The First Email Response
The first response felt very AI generated cookie cutter, where it was obvious that nothing I said was read:
Thank you for contacting American Airlines Customer Relations.
Please accept my deepest apologies for the experience you've described. Our commitment to placing you at the center of all we do is unwavering, and your feedback underscores this commitment. Rest assured, your insights will be made available to our leadership team as we work to ensure we provide the high-quality customer experience you deserve.
Thanks for giving me the chance to review your feedback. On behalf of the entire American Airlines team, we appreciate you choosing to fly with us. Wherever your next journey may take you, we'll be thrilled to welcome you back on board.
My Response To The Initial Email
At this point I was pretty hot, and fired back an email to the canned response I received. It was as follows:
Can I get a non canned / AI response? Are you guys able to make an exception since your program is the issue? It normally takes 1 day for LPs to post after a credit card statement cuts and it has been 19 days and nothing. I lost out on my challenge and dropped from Platinum Pro to Platinum (which I had earned normally the previous year) because of your internal issue. Can an exception not be made for this instance?
To which I received … nothing. Not even a canned AI response. Strangely, or lucky enough, the American Airlines Platinum Pro status challenge was still showing on my AAdvantage account. After my Loyalty Points finally hit my account (close to a month after my statement ended) I checked it again. It still said I had failed the challenge, but the Loyalty Points had updated to show that I had in fact earned what was needed.
My Third Time Writing Them
I should note that I tweeted at their customer service team during this as well. Shocker, I didn't get anywhere there either. I decided to go back to the original email chain and fire off one more email before going the phone tree route. The last thing I wanted to do was sit on hold for an hour to get this handled after all. Here is what I sent the third time (same email chain that received no response from my second request):
The LPs finally hit, and the tracker for the challenge updated to show I made it. The challenge ended though because of the delay to post (which was not my fault and shows as completed properly now). Is there a way to correct this?
I included this screenshot in the email as well. The arrows and stuff were added to it for this article, but were not on the email.

Maybe American Airlines already knew this was an issue with some of the status challenges and would have fixed it eventually. Maybe I would have been toast without the tracker being updated. Either way, the screenshot seemed to dislodge the ineptitude from the American Airlines service staff.
Finally Getting A Resolution x3
About four hours after sending the email above I received the following response:
Thank you for your recent communication with Customer Relations at American Airlines regarding your Instant Status Pass Challenge.
After reviewing your Account, I see you signed up for the Instant Status Pass challenge for Platinum Pro on August 2024. Your status now shows as Platinum Pro until August 6, 2025.
If you have any additional questions, please let me know.
Finally, let me say how much we appreciate your loyalty as an AAdvantage Platinum Pro® member.
Thanks!
That was an impressive response time right there. Not to be outdone I received a call the next day, a Saturday, where they left a voicemail saying my challenge had been updated. They followed up the voicemail with another email confirming this. Not sure why two different agents reached out a total of three times to fix the same problem, but I was glad it was handled. It would have been nice if they had just read my initial complaint and done something then though.
American Airlines Platinum Pro Status Challenge: ToP Thoughts
Maybe American Airlines would have realized that they had an issue with their Platinum Pro status challenge on their own. Given enough time it is plausible. I don't want to play the wait and see game in instances like this though. We need to be our own best advocates and continue to hit them with as much information as possible. I will say that it is super frustrating when you take the time to spell everything out and then get a canned response to it. I don't want to have to reach out three to four times to get human eyes on my issue. That enrages me more than the initial problem. Especially when it is an issue that should have never happened if you had the proper technology to go through your loyalty program efficiently at year end time.
Let me know if you have had similar issues with AAdvantage Loyalty Points posting on time over in the ToP Facebook Group.
