Air Canada Aeroplan Devaluation
Air Canada Aeroplan is a favorite frequent flyer program among award travelers—especially those of us at ToP—for its generous award chart and routing rules, not to mention its relatively easy-to-book awards. It's one we often turn to for booking business class flights on Star Alliance airlines or short domestic hops on United Airlines. But as it goes in the world of award travel, Air Canada Aeroplan is updating its award chart, and it's mostly a devaluation. Air Canada announced last month that it will introduce a new award chart on June 1, 2026. As far as devaluations go, it could be much worse. Some of the best sweet spots—like business class awards to Europe—will cost slightly more points, while others actually get a little cheaper. Here's what to expect with the upcoming Air Canada Aeroplan devaluation.
What's Changing With The Air Canada Aeroplan Award Chart?
Unlike many other airline loyalty programs, Air Canada Aeroplan uses a zone-based award chart rather than a purely distance-based one. The world is divided into “zones,” with fixed award rates when traveling inside a zone or from one zone to another based on how many miles a given route is. However, Air Canada has recently introduced dynamic pricing for its own flights and those for “select partners” including United Airlines, with “starting at” rates. And as of June 1, 2026, Air Canada is updating its award chart. The airline has thankfully spelled out exactly what's changing, and the changes include a mix of increases and decreases for both Air Canada and partner award flights. You can see the new award chart on Air Canada's website.

These are some of the most noteworthy impacts of the Air Canada Aeroplan devaluation:
- Business class awards between the U.S. and Europe (for flights between 4,001 and 6,000 miles), including flights on Star Alliance partners like Lufthansa, TAP Air Portugal, SWISS Air, Austrian Airlines, United and others will increase from 70,000 to 75,000 Aeroplan points each way. That incudes flights like this Lufthansa business class flight from Washington, D.C. (IAD) to Munich (MUC), which will cost 5,000 more points come June 1.

- First class partner awards between the U.S. and Europe (for flights between between 4,001 and 6,000 miles) like Lufthansa First Class will now cost 120,000 points each way, up from 100,000.
- Economy awards for flights between the East Coast cities like New York (JFK) and Boston (BOS) and Europe (up to 4,000 miles) are actually decreasing from 35,000 to 32,500 Aeroplan points each way.
- Aeroplan award rates for long-haul flights between the North America and Pacific zones, which includes Asia, Australia and New Zealand, are going up almost across the board. Business class redemptions for flights between the U.S. and Asia (between 5,001 and 7,000 miles) via select partners will increase from 75,000 points to 85,000 points each way—a more than 13% increase. Meanwhile, business class redemptions via all other partners will jump from 87,500 miles to 102,500 miles, marking a more than 17% increase.
- Business class rates on intra-Europe flights are decreasing. Award flights under 1,000 miles will lower from 15,000 to 12,500 Aeroplan points each way, while slightly longer flights (1,001 to 2,000 miles) will go from 25,000 to 22,500 points each way.
- Some intra-Europe economy flights will see slightly higher award rates, with flights between 1,001 and 2,000 miles increasing from 12,500 to 15,000 points each way.
- Economy award rates for partner flights within Asia are also going up. Flights between 1,001 and 2,000 miles are increasing from 12,500 to 15,000 Aeroplan points. Meanwhile, flights between 2,001 and 5,000 miles are increasing by 5,000 points, from 25,000 to 30,000 miles.
You still have a few weeks left to book at the current award rates. Not sure about the distance of your flight? You can plug your departing and destination airports into Great Circle Mapper to find out.

Air Canada Aeroplan Devaluation: ToP Thoughts
The new Air Canada Aeroplan award chart will go into effect on June 1, 2026. Any devaluation is a bummer, and some Aeroplan sweet spots definitely soured a little bit. But we're just glad things aren't worse. We still think Aeroplan is one of the best loyalty programs out there, especially for booking Star Alliance flights. At least Aeroplan gave advance notice, so you've still got time to take advantage of the cheaper rates. If you're booking now, there's a chance to take advantage of the current Aeroplan transfer bonus with Rove, too. What are your thoughts on the Air Canada Aeroplan devaluation? Tell us in the comments over on the ToP Facebook Group.
