Allianz Trip Delay Insurance Claim

Here at Travel on Point(s), we're big fans of annual travel policies. Sure, many premium credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Bilt Palladium, American Express Platinum, and Capital One Venture X offer travel insurance and many folks rely solely on that coverage. But when you travel more than a few times a year, an annual plan oftentimes makes more sense than tracking which card you used for what trip, so you know what coverage applies and where to file a claim. Doing so also allows you to use any card you wish to book your travel, including a new card with a welcome offer. But with all of the talk of insurance policies, we rarely share our experiences. I'm back with all the info on my recent Allianz Trip Delay Insurance claim. Hopefully, this helps shed light on how beneficial these policies are.

Details of Our Allianz Policy

Sarah and I carry an Allianz AllTrips Premier annual policy every year. In fact, this is our fifth year in a row. Other than our horrible 2023, when we maxed out our coverage with 3 different claims, we've never needed to file a claim. Despite not needing it for many years, we view the policy as “peace of mind” and a great arrow in our travel quiver. Sure, it's not the cheapest (our policy is $715/year). But we love knowing that if a flight is cancelled for a covered reason, we can rebook ourselves in our original class of service and be reimbursed.

My 2026 Trip Delay Saga

The Cancellation

I'm teeing off on hole #3 at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wisconsin around 8:30 a.m. when a text message comes through. Womp, womp, womp. Southwest cancelled our flight from Milwaukee to Baltimore Washington International that afternoon. (Note: this text message was forwarded to me later that afternoon from my buddy that booked our flights).

We tried to call Southwest to get rebooked. But staying on hold for more than a couple of minutes while playing a $400+ round of golf (don't worry, I erased it with miles!!!) wasn't happening. By the time our round of golf ended, Southwest had rebooked us the following day. The new flights were 1) a 6 a.m. departure and 2) a connecting flight with a very long layover in Nashville. Not quite the quick non-stop we originally had.

The New Flights

We knew the new flights did not work for us. We also knew we had all the requirements to file an Allianz trip delay insurance claim. So we got to work rebooking ourselves once we were off the golf course. As a placeholder, I had quickly booked the 3 of us on a non-stop from Chicago to BWI for later that evening. After doing a bit of research back at the hotel, we realized that was our only non-stop option home from Wisconsin. But that raised another dilemma: our rental car was an in and out of Milwaukee (MKE) and we now needed to get to Chicago O'Hare (ORD). It was time to call National Rental Car and hope for a friendly agent.

The Trek to O'Hare

Despite my best efforts, National was unwilling to do anything for my rental car. Multiple agents claimed that it was not possible to drop off the car at O'Hare, as the Milwaukee airport facility did not allow for one-way rentals. We were running out of time, and already on the way back to the Milwaukee airport. We decided to pivot.

So what did we do? Again, knowing we were filing an Allianz trip delay insurance claim, I got a Lyft XL from Milwaukee to O'Hare, a ride of just over an hour. It was frustrating to move 3 bags plus 3 golf bags from a rental van to a Lyft XL. But it beat all the other alternatives. A little over 1.5 hours after arriving in our rental car at MKE, we had our bags checked and were through security at ORD. We tipped our driver generously and sincerely hoped Allianz would cover our most expensive Lyft ride ever.

Filing An Allianz Trip Delay Insurance Claim

The Claim

Life got in the way for me and it took me a few weeks to file my insurance claim. After reviewing all the options, it was clear my best option was filing an Allianz trip delay insurance claim. So I gathered my documents and quickly explained what happened. I requested reimbursement for the following:

  • $217.33 for the Lyft XL from Milwaukee Airport (MKE) to Chicago O'Hare Airport (ORD)
  • $88.76 for dinner & drinks at ORD
  • $13.29 for Starbucks at ORD, after our new flight was delayed by 2+ hours
  • Total reimbursement: $319.38

I made an executive decision to not request any costs associated with our new United flights. The flights were 15,000 points and $5.60 each, which was a savings over the cost of our original Southwest flights.

Submitting The Claim

I ultimately submitted this claim, along with 6 documents to support my request, at 11:14 a.m. on August 12, 2026. I immediately received an email confirming this submission.

Response From Allianz

Imagine my reaction when I woke up on August 13 and SURPRISE! I already had a decision on my Allianz trip delay insurance claim! My claim was approved, up to the daily maximum of $300. This confirmation email came through at 12:26 a.m. on August 13, 2026, a mere 13 hours and 12 minutes after I submitted it.

Lo and behold, not only had Allianz initiated the payment, but it was already in my bank account at 4:30 a.m.

Allianz Trip Delay Insurance Claim: ToP Thoughts

I'm not even sure if a summary or recap paragraph is required. It seems as though Allianz took care of the “mic drop” moment itself. Suffice it to say, this is probably the best customer service I have experienced. Yes, it was a cut-and-dried claim. Yes, I sent the proper documentation and dotted my “i” and crossed my “t.” But still, I certainly never expected a resolution (and payment!!) within 12 hours. That is incredible! If you've ever worried about filing a trip delay claim, hopefully this sets your mind at ease a little bit!
