Discover Moves Customers to Capital One
It has been a while since the initial announcement, so you may have forgotten that Capital One acquired Discover back in 2025. The transition process was set to take place over a two year process, ultimately being completed by the end of 2027. We covered when some cards began changing earlier this year. Now some customers are receiving emails with timelines as Discover moves customers to Capital One and its platform. I received an email this week with a timeline and thought it would be helpful to review what the switch entails and how it will impact cardholders.

What Is Happening
As part of the merger process, there will be one platform to manage Discover cards. Capital One is moving the Discover cards over to its platform to manage your cards. This means you will sign into Capital One to manage, pay cards, and everything you would do just like you would a Capital One card. Capital One has an information page with all the details and frequently asked questions about this as well.
They emphasized some important details for cardholders in the email I received:
- The Discover brand isn't going away, and your card will stay on the Discover Network.
- You’ll continue earning the same 5% cash back at rotating categories each quarter, on up to $1,500 in purchases, when you activate and keep your rewards balance.
- Your card, card number and APRs remain the same, with no annual fee.
- Customer service available anytime, day or night.

When Will I Switch?
The plan is for Discover to move cardholders to Capital One in stages. So, this will vary for everyone with some getting earlier dates already. I just received my email this week noting my date will be October 19, 2026. How that switch happens exactly has not been laid out. But as noted in the emails, it says I will receive more information in the future.
- Now: Keep using your card, making payments and managing your account as usual.
- Over the coming months: You'll get more information from both Discover and Capital One about how you'll manage your account moving forward.
- Oct. 19: Start using the Capital One website and app to manage this account.
According to all the information, everything about your card will stay the same. You will simply manage it via a different platform. As a current Capital One customer I am hoping for a smooth transition. But we should always be prepared for bumps, as with any change.
Discover Moves Customers To Capital One: ToP Thoughts
The merger of 2025 is now taking full effect. If you have a Discover card, you will want to be on the lookout for an email. Overall this should hopefully be a seamless transition. Let's hope we don't encounter any major issues. Have you received your email or had to transition yet? Let us know in the Facebook Group.
