United TravelBank Expiration Glitch
Every year, our readers must find a way to use their airline incidental coupons, err, credits. We have an entire guide to what works with American Express credits, for example. Because of this, thousands of you utilize the United Airlines TravelBank regularly. This week, we are seeing a United TravelBank expiration glitch, or at least we hope it is a glitch. We dig in to confirm this is a glitch and why it matters.

The United TravelBank Explained
Why does the United TravelBank expiration glitch matter? Let us explain. The United TravelBank is exactly as it sounds: you can deposit money into the TravelBank and later use those funds to pay for flights operated by United Airlines or United Express. Luckily, depositing money into the TravelBank does not act like a paid flight and more like an ancillary expense. You earn a card's air fare multiplier, if applicable, but it will trigger airline incidental credits on cards like the American Express Platinum and Business Platinum and the Ritz Carlton card.
Another card with a direct United TravelBank perk is the IHG Premier card. As we outlined earlier this month, the best time to maximize that TravelBank cash is in the first few days of January or July of any given year.
Normally, all funds deposited into the United TravelBank, absent exceptions like the IHG Premier perk above, have a 5 year expiration from the date of deposit. As of publication, this banner is still prominently displayed on the United TravelBank website.

A Glitch in the Matrix?
This week, members of our Facebook group began noticing a United TravelBank expiration glitch. Rather than funds showing a 5 year expiration date, all funds showed a 12 month expiration (or less). Obviously, if true, this is a major devaluation and, likely, not something United Airlines could legally pull off. You can't tell people to deposit money and that it is safe for 5 years, to then change the terms to only 12 months retroactively with no-notice.
Upon checking my account this morning, all of my TravelBank funds expire in 12 months or less.

While this is concerning, I do fully expect this is a glitch. If United Airlines tried to lower the 5 year expiration to a 12 month expiration, a class-action lawsuit would be filed faster than United Airlines could say “hold my beer.” We have reached out to United Airlines, but have not yet heard a response.
United TravelBank Expiration Glitch
While this United TravelBank expiration glitch is, like we're calling it, a glitch, it is highly annoying. I would expect a quick fix, but anything is possible. We suggest that you go into your TravelBank account and screenshot all deposits and all expiration dates to make sure everything is fixed properly. This is even more important if you have any funds that are expiring soon, or may have incorrectly expired in the last few days!
