Thompson Houston Quick Thoughts
We're back with another quick thoughts/mini hotel review. In early January, I kicked off my 2026 travels with a weekend at the Thompson Houston. We had a family member visiting us in New Orleans and wanted to roadtrip somewhere. We tend to visit Texas a few times a year, and the 2-year-old Thompson Houston had been on my wishlist. The 36-floor high-rise leans into artful, midcentury modern design with the swanky, moody aesthetic Thompson hotels are known for. It’s nicely located, about a 10-minute drive from downtown. Bonus: It’s super pet-friendly. So we whisked ourselves away to the Bayou City—with my dog Bella in tow. I booked via The Edit by Chase Travel℠ for what would turn out to be my favorite Thompson stay yet. Here are my Thompson Houston quick thoughts.

ToggleWhat Was The Cost Of Booking the Thompson Houston & Is There Is Value In The Price?
The Thompson Houston is a Category 5 Hyatt property. It can currently be booked from 17,000 to 23,000 Hyatt points per night. Direct-booking rates for a 23,000-point night back in January hovered around $460 per night, or $0.02 per point.
Rather than use Hyatt points for this reservation, though, I stacked perks from my Chase Sapphire Reserve® Credit Card. Toward the end of 2025, I was prowling options to check off my $250 credit for The Edit before it expired. I looked at several Thompson properties, which seemed to offer some of the better values for this perk. I liked the idea of earning some extra Hyatt elite-qualifying nights, too.
Ultimately, I applied 30,000 Points Boosted Chase Ultimate Rewards to my $1,050.14 two-night stay, bringing the cash total to $555.14. My card’s $300 annual travel credit had just refreshed, so after the $550 in combined credits, it brought my out-of-pocket cost to $5.14. This saved me about 16,000 points I would have needed to otherwise redeem through Hyatt. One other sweet bonus: Since this was a loyalty-eligible cash stay, I earned about 5,000 Hyatt points. Considering the extra perks afforded by the Chase luxury booking, I was satisfied with this use of the credit.

Thompson Houston Quick Thoughts On The Room: What I Liked About It & What Could Be Improved
Our Edit booking was immediately acknowledged at check-in. We were offered a 4 p.m. checkout and handed a letter outlining the benefits. Because we had a family member traveling with us, we’d selected a double queen room. The hotel upgraded us to a slightly pricier version of this room with a Skyline View. Cash rates would have started around $560 per night for this accommodation. We enjoyed the floor-to-ceiling window, from which we watched the rain and the sunset over downtown. We happened to be visiting during the Chevron Houston Marathon. On Sunday morning, we woke up to runners streaming past below.
Our room included a desk, wardrobe, and a hutch with a beverage fridge and Nespresso machine. The beds were comfortable, though I wish each one had its own nightstand rather than sharing one in the middle. We appreciated the wide array of lighting options in the room. The blackout curtains were even trimmed with warm-white light strips for some sleek ambiance at night. The bathroom was spacious, with a walk-in shower and an additional vanity area with seating. I especially appreciated the abundance of hooks for towels and robes—a small but thoughtful touch. If you can snag one of the 172-room hotel’s 34 suites, the bathrooms are even more impressive. Think: striking glass-enclosed wet rooms and soaking tubs.

What Are Some Of The Better Amenities The Property Offers & Is It Missing Anything Important?
Amenities
Thompson Houston is a super amenity-rich property. An infinity-edge pool and green space with lounge chairs overlook the downtown skyline. It was a chilly weekend, but we were lured outside anyway by the stunning views. There’s a full-service spa onsite, and it was even offering discounted mini facial happy hour sessions during our visit. Some other really unique perks include an electric car service that will drop you off anywhere within a 3-mile radius and e-bikes available for use in the nearby park and trails. Guests can access an expansive fitness and wellness center next to the hotel. Instead of complimentary bottled water, we were given reusable aluminum bottles at check-in to refill at the hydration stations on every floor. The water dispensers included still and sparkling water. I’ll take bubbly water any day!

Utilizing a Property Credit
The $100 property credit from our Edit booking could be used for food and beverage at Sol 7 (or for in-room dining and minibar purchases), the Thompson Spa or pool cabana rentals. It could not be used at the other onsite restaurants. Since complimentary breakfast only covered two people, we used the property credit toward breakfast, coffee and drinks throughout the weekend at Sol 7 for our party of three. Sol 7 is small but stylish, with a curved bar and a show-stopping marble backsplash. Its large glass doors could be opened to expand the room into an indoor-outdoor dining space with patio seating facing the pool.
On our second day, overflow dining was moved to the a library-style lounge across the lobby. Outfitted with cozy couches, bistro tables, walnut bookshelves, a grand fireplace and sprawling downtown views, I preferred this gorgeous room to the restaurant itself. Over two meals, we tried the salmon bagel, short rib hash, granola, bruleed French toast, hangover burger and classic breakfast. There was also a brunch buffet on Sunday at Sol7. But after seeing that the offerings resembled more of a basic continental breakfast, we opted to continue dining a la carte. The food was above average, and the portions were filling enough to carry us to dinner. Later, we were able to a check out a nearby Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables restaurant, Maximo, for a stellar meal.

What Was Your Favorite Thing About The Property?
Thompson Houston is extremely pet-friendly. We don’t usually travel with our dog, Bella, but we could not resist bringing her on this trip. She was warmly welcomed with the pet amenity kit: a plush, velvety bed and food and water bowls. Bella was absolutely hypnotized by the wide windows in our room. She was glued to watching all the action down below. The best part: The hotel does not charge pet fees. (Many Thompsons allow pets to stay for free, though the fees and specific policies vary by property.) It’s no wonder we saw dogs of all sizes in the hotel throughout the weekend. This was such an awesome perk that really added value to our stay. Though Thompson isn’t my preferred Hyatt brand, this amenity would be enough to sway me to pick a Thompson over another property.

What Was Your Least Favorite Thing About The Property?
The entrance can be a little disorienting at first. Guests enter the building on the ground floor and walk back toward the elevator. The lobby is on the seventh floor. A separate set of elevators services the guest rooms.
Overnight parking is valet-only and $60 per night. That’s a steep rate for those without Globalist status or who book using cash. After dropping our bags, we opted for street parking about a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Luckily, we didn’t have any problem find free parking nearby. But the combination of the lobby and parking situation meant we had to budget extra time when coming and going from our room. A small inconvenience, but not a dealbreaker.

Would I Stay At Thompson Houston Again?
I’ve stayed at a few Thompsons around the U.S., but this was my favorite experience yet. It is also one of the nicest Category 5 hotels I’ve visited. Everyone in my party unanimously adored our stay—especially Bella. Since we had our car and were going to be out and about all day at a museum, restaurants and shopping, we did not have a chance to try the car service or e-bikes. I am eager to return and try to take even better advantage of the amenities. With Bella by my side, of course.

Thompson Houston Quick Thoughts
The Thompson Houston is a suave, amenity-packed property. A quick roadtrip to maximize a premium card perk turned into one of my most memorable stays of the year so far. Not bad for a few dollars out of pocket. I'd find just as much value staying here with Hyatt points—and I'm confident I will in the future. Have you stayed at this property?
