Negative Chase Business Referral Rules

There are some new negative Chase business referral rules that hit people's refer a friend pages this morning. We saw a few reports of it in the ToP Facebook Group early this morning and were able to recreate it ourselves. With all of the recent Chase application rules changes this isn't overly surprising, although it is a substantial negative change for many. It is actually in line with Capital One's horrible business referral rules. That feels like sinking to the bottom in Chase's case.

Update 10/2/25: Did They Change It Early?

It looks like the terminology has changed on the page where you grab your referral links at. Thank you to ToP Facebook Group member Linh for pointing this out. A couple of others in the comments are seeing it on their end too. This is what everyone is seeing:

We did some digging in the terms of the offer and didn't see it listed in there though. So, did Chase accidentally change the terminology on the link creation page prematurely? Or, did they just change the entire thing early? At this point we simply don't know. I would lean towards it being an error that they released on the landing page early since they did provide a date for the change originally. Chase may be able to fight awarding any points since it is showing on the landing page though. I guess hope for the best is the answer until the previously announced 10/7 date. After that you will not earn bonus points for any referrals to current Chase business card holders.

What Has Changed?

In the past, anyone your referred a Chase card to would earn you refer a friend points upon approval. The kind of points, and how many, would be totally dependent on the card's refer a friend set up.

The nice thing about the Chase business cards referrals is that they are all included in the same pot. Meaning you could refer from one Ink business card to another and get the bonus points. You would usually earn 20,000 per referral for up to 100,000 points per card / per year when doing this. Although, for a short time you could get 40,000 points per approval. The nice part is that if you have multiple Ink cards you could increase your yearly cap by 100,000 points for each individual card account you had. The referral bonus points worked the same though, if the referrer was approved then you would get the points.

Chase has changed things up in a major way though. This appears to be for business cards only at this time.

New Chase Ink Refer A Friend Rules

In the near future Chase will be blocking points for any referrals to a person that already has a business account with Chase. This is a massive change, particularly in a two person household. That means you can only refer one card to your significant other and receive points going forward. After that they would be considered an existing Chase business cardholder and no longer eligible to earn you bonus referral points. Here are the terms you will find on the Chase refer a friend page:

Effective October 7th, 2025, you will be eligible to receive referral bonus awards for new Chase Business card customers only. Referrals of individuals with existing Chase business card accounts will no longer qualify for the referral bonus.

Negative Chase Business Referral Rules

This will hurt many people's long term earning capability for sure. Only being able to refer each person to one business card is a tough pill to swallow. The question is will this be a hard and fast rule, or will it be highly your mileage may vary like Chase's other new rules?

Other Noticeable Change

There was another interesting change in the Chase refer a friend terms that I wanted to point out. It is likely going after influencers and sites that offer personal referrals. It is worded as follows:

If 10 or more of your friends use the referral URL within a month to apply, at Chase's discretion you may not receive any bonus points for the friends who apply that month and are approved for the card.

Negative Chase Business Referral Rules

I wonder if this is for each card's unique URL, or if it is across all accounts. If it is per card then it isn't a big deal, since earning is capped at 5 cards already. You just need to be diligent to how many people get your referral link. If it is across all of your accounts, then that is a little tougher.

Ink Business Referral Changes: ToP Thoughts

These negative Chase business referral rules is a substantial loss for some. Being able to refer your spouse to 3 or 4 cards alone is worth up to 80,000 bonus points. In the future you would only be able to earn 20,000 points for those sign ups (after October 7th). Not to mention your extended family and friends fall under the same rules. As with all things, we must adapt and survive. The more things close in, the more we need to look for other / better options. Let us know your thoughts over in the ToP Facebook Group.
