Combining Capital One Miles With Someone Else

Capital One has made a name for itself for its card lineup in recent years. Its premium credit card, the Capital One Venture X, offers incredible value for a $395 annual fee. Once an afterthought, Capital One's transfer partners are now pretty robust, including new partner Japan Airlines. And there's an even bigger reason for the whole family to collect Capital One miles. Capital One offers some of the most lenient rules for combining miles between accounts. Let's see why this matters, and how to combine Capital One miles.

Combining Capital One Miles: Why Should You Care?

Earning a lot of miles to redeem for personal travel is an obvious goal of readers of this website. However, having the ability to transfer and combine miles between Capital One accounts can further optimize your award travel.

For one, if you're short a few miles for an award ticket, a simple transfer system makes reservations quick and easy. Nothing's worse than an award disappearing before you get the right amount of miles in your account.

If you're flying as a couple or even a family, combining miles to book awards on one record locator ensures that award availability remains intact for your desired booking. And, keeping awards all on one record locator makes utilizing status benefits easier. Finally, when things go wrong (and they will if you travel enough), having one reservation makes troubleshooting trips super easy.

If you plan on downgrading a Capital One card from a miles earning card to a no-fee card, it's also helpful to have this feature. You could transfer miles to your partner who also earns Capital One miles, saving them for a future trip.

Combining Capital One Miles: The Rules

First, to combine Capital One miles between accounts, you'll need either a card that earns Capital One Miles. That's would be one of the following cards:

You can combine awards between all of your miles-earning cards. If you have a cash back card and a miles-earning card, you can convert that cash back into miles in your online account, effectively doubling the value of your rewards. This is a great strategy if you have one of the Savor cards that has some unique spending categories, like 3% cash back on streaming services.

If you want to transfer miles (or cash back) between accounts of different Capital One customers, you'll need to call the number on the back of your Capital One card to start the transfer. There's no requirements for the receiving party of the transfer. Many loyalty programs require members to be related in some way, but not Capital One. You can combine miles, or turn cash back into miles, with any other Capital One cardholder because of it. To complete the transfer, you will need the name and full credit card number of the person to whom you are transferring to.

There are also no caps on the amount of transfers allowed each year, and the miles never expire. How's that for flexibility?

A Quick Note On Hang Up, Call Again:

Some agents at Capital One don't know about this option. If you call and an agent tells you they are not able to combine cash back to rewards, you should hang up and call again. Repeat this process until you find a rep that is willing to help. In my experience, I had to call twice to get to a rep that would process the request.

Combining Capital One Miles: How Good Is It?

Capital One is by far the most lenient bank when it comes to transferring miles between accounts. You don't even need to have any relationship with the person you're transferring to! Let's look at how it compares to the competition.

  • Citi
    • Citi offers the ability to transfer ThankYou Points between other ThankYou accounts, up to 100,000 miles per year, but those miles will expire in 90 days. If you have an award use for them immediately, that's no big deal, but could present issues if you have to cancel an award trip.
  • Chase
    • They allow transfers between accounts for Ultimate Rewards points if you share the same billing address.
  • American Express
    • Amex does not allow the transfer of Membership Rewards points between members, at least without transferring them out to an authorized user's loyalty account of a transfer partner. Just know that a 90-day waiting period is triggered when a new authorized user is added to an account for security reasons.
  • Bilt Rewards
    • They do not currently offer the ability to transfer between members, but you can transfer Bilt Points to authorized users' loyalty accounts, similar to Amex. There's no holding period like Amex, so this is a less burdensome policy.

Combining Capital One Miles: ToP Thoughts

I love that combining Capital One miles is so easy. The only slightly annoying aspect of the process is that it can't be done online. Besides that, it's by far the most lenient bank for combining miles. With a growing list of transfer partners, a luxury credit card that doesn't cost a mortgage payment to hold each year, and lenient policies like the one we just detailed, Capital One has me thinking more about their credit cards for 2026. Let me know what you think about combining Capital One miles over in the ToP Facebook Group.
