$2.5 Billion Amazon Prime Settlement
Recently, Amazon settled a $2.5 billion case with the federal government, which alleged that Amazon used deceptive practices to lure consumers into signing up for Amazon Prime. Amazon must pay a $1 billion civil penalty directly to the government, which leaves $1.5 billion for potential refunds to customers. Some customers will receive a settlement automatically, while others will have to apply for relief. Let's dig into all the details. Update 2/5/25: We now have a landing page to file a claim without a pin or code.

ToggleWho Is Eligible?
Eligible customers are those that signed up for Amazon Prime, or tried to cancel Amazon Prime, between June 29, 2019 and June 23, 2025. Someone who “tried to cancel” is defined by “entering, but failing to complete, the online cancellation process or by inadvertently taking a Save Offer during the online cancellation process during the Relevant Time Period” according to the settlement.

While $1.5 billion for consumers seems like a lot, the maximum relief any one Prime member can receive is $51. The settlement will be divided into two groups:
- Group 1
- Any customer that enrolled during the infringment period, but failed to use more than three Amazon Prime benefits. They will receive an automatic settlement of $51 within 90 days of the settlement's signing.
- Group 2
- Any eligible Prime customer defined by the settlement, who used less than ten Prime benefits during the infringement period. They'll have to fill out a claims form, which Amazon will send out 30 days after Group 1's settlements have been disbursed. This group may receive less than $51 of settlement money, depending on how many people sign up for relief.
We'll update this post once the settlement claims page has gone live.

$2.5 Billion Amazon Prime Settlement: ToP Thoughts
While not life-changing money, if you qualify for this settlement automatically, it should be an easy $51. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until the $2.5 billion Amazon Prime settlement claim form goes live to be able to see what kind of relief you might receive. Like class action suits, you never know when your relief will come in, or how much it ultimately will be. It never hurts to try! Let us know if you're eligible over in the ToP Facebook Group.
