As the second quarter comes to a close it is time to start looking forward to the 5% / 5x reset for the Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex cards. You will soon have a new chance to rack up 7,500 Ultimate Rewards points. The Chase Freedom 3rd quarter bonus categories are here, let's take a look.

Bonus Categories For 3rd Quarter 2023

The categories for this upcoming quarter are as follows (5x earning on your first $1,500 in spend from all 3 combined):

• Gas
• EV (Electric Vehicle) charging
• Select live entertainment
  • Merchants in this category sell tickets for live in-person entertainment such as:
    • major sporting events
    • zoos and aquariums
    • concerts
    • theatrical productions
    • museums
    • tourist attractions and exhibits
    • amusement parks
    • circuses
    • carnivals
    • bands
    • entertainers
    • Ticket agencies selling on behalf of the entertainment venue are included
  • Some merchants that sell tickets for in-person entertainment are not included in this category:
    • movie theaters
    • bowling alleys
    • horse racing tracks
    • casinos
    • dance hall/clubs
    • purchasing from a hotel/concierge is not included nor excursions or purchases as part of a travel package.

This is only showing in your Ultimate Rewards login for your Freedom card. The activation link should update tomorrow so that you can activate it and be all set when July 1st rolls around.

My Plans For This Quarter

Gas is probably my favorite quarter because we drive quite a bit and because I have Speedway locations all around me. Speedway sells a nice variety of gift cards and take credit cards for them so this makes it pretty easy for me. If you don't have Speedway, or another gas station chain with gift cards, this could be a bit more difficult.

I would check some 7-11 stores around you, they often code as gas with Chase even if they don't sell any. Also consider your grocery store's fuel center. If they have a store attached, and it isn't just pumps, they may sell grocery gift cards and it could code as gas. Make sure to do a test purchase to see how it codes first. Otherwise, pay attention during your travels. Maybe you are going to an area that sells gift cards like Royal Farms on the East Coast etc.

This quarter is a bit of feast or famine for people. Either it is the easiest quarter of the year or it is near impossible to max out. Hopefully my tips above gave you some ideas that may work. Paying attention when you travel could be a game changer and open things up for many.
