British Airways Status Match

There is a new British Airways status match that you should jump on now if you are interested and qualify. You want to act quickly since you just never know how quickly these deals will get last before they get pulled. Some last mere minutes, instead of days, after all. The interesting thing about this match is that it is targeted at North American dwellers and is not available to customers in British Airways' own back yard. That is bad for them, but good for most of our ToP readers. This was first reported by Head for Points (found via my buddy Tyler).

Details Of The Offer

Here is the breakdown of the airlines and status levels that British Airways will status match too. We'll get to why this is worthwhile, even if you plan to never fly British Airways, in a bit.

AirlineBA SilverBA Gold
Delta AirlinesGoldPlatinum
Air Canada50K75K and Super Elite
LufthansaSenatorHon Circle
United AirlinesPremier GoldPremier Platinum, Premier 1K
Air France / KLMGoldPlatinum
Scandinavian AirlinesGoldDiamond, Platinum
Virgin AtlanticSilverGold

I do find it strange that they didn't add Diamond for Delta and just have Platinum there. I wonder if that was just a mistake on British Airways' part, since they have multiple tiers for other airlines like United etc.

British Airways Status Match

What If You Want To Keep The Status Match Longer?

All you have to do is book and travel on two qualifying transatlantic flights within six months of the date British Airways upgrades you from the status match.

To qualify, these flights must:

Once you’ve returned from your trip, we’ll extend your upgraded membership to the end of your next membership year.

If you don’t meet the required conditions within six months of us awarding you upgraded status, you’ll be downgraded to the Tier that matches the number of Tier Points you’ve earned in this period.

Why This Status Match Is Useful Even For Non BA Flyers

This status match sounds great and all, but you may never fly British Airways, so why do it? It may still be worthwhile to you because of their airline alliance. If you don't already have status with a oneworld airline, then you can parlay this status match into that. If you are planning on flying any oneworld alliance airlines in the next 6 months then this Birtish Airways status match could come in mighty handy.

British Airways Status Match: ToP Thoughts

If you have status in one of the airlines listed above then you should jump on this while you can. I wouldn't be surprised to see it end early if it is as popular as I think it will be. Unfortunately for me, I dropped from Delta Platinum to Silver this year so I no longer qualify. Hopefully many of you do though!
