Recent Amex Retention Offers

All of us in the points and miles space know to call the credit card company for a retention offer when an annual fee posts. This is especially important with Amex, which is typically very generous with retention offers. While retention offers are never guaranteed, we have seen a lot of data points in our Facebook group involving some very generous Amex retention offers.

What Are Retention Offers?

If you're new to traveling on points, a retention offer is when a bank tries to entice a customer to keep a card open for another year if the customer was thinking about closing the card. As a condition to a retention offer, you must agree to keep your card open for 12 months starting from the date you accept the retention offer.

With Amex, retention offers typically are in the form of a spending bonus. Amex will offer cardholders X number of points if the cardholder spends Y amount of dollars within a certain period. This is a great way to offset a credit card's annual fee.

You can ask for a retention offer by calling Amex or by reaching out via their chat function. If you choose to call, check out this great trick to bypass the automated system.

Lots Of Recent Data Points Of Very Generous Offers

Over the last week or so, we have seen a lot of data points involving very high retention offers for Amex cards. These are for the premium cards like the Business Platinum, Amex Platinum and Business Gold cards. The most common ones have been:

  • 70,000 Membership Rewards after spending $5,000 over 3 months
  • 55,000 Membership Rewards after spending $4,000 over 3 months.

And in the past we have seen these offers that may still be floating around too:

  • 40,000 Membership Rewards after spending $3,000 over 3 months
  • 60,000 Membership Rewards after spending $4,000 over 3 months

These are essentially full blown welcome offers for a new card, but without having to actually open a new card! These are absolute no-brainers. If you get something lower be sure to ask if there is anything better. They usually lead with their best offer, but not always.
