No matter where you live, what you do, or how you commute, we all benefit from gas stations. Even if you don't own or lease a car, gas stations offer many of life’s other necessities, like slurpees, snacks, and gift cards to many of your favorite retailers. With a strategy in mind, anyone can benefit from gas stations. Today, we show you the best cards to maximize spending at gas stations.

Personal Credit Cards

Citi Premier
This card earns 3x points at gas stations with no annual cap, making it one of our favorite credit cards at ToP. The card has a $95 annual fee. You can transfer Citi ThankYou Points to over a dozen travel partners for excellent value.

Citi Double Cash
With no annual fee and 2x TYP uncapped on every purchase, this card is great for almost everything.

Amex Everyday Preferred
This card has a $95 annual fee and earns 2x at gas stations with no annual cap. If 30+ transactions post on a statement, you earn an additional 50% bonus, so 3x at gas stations.

Citi Costco Anywhere
This card earns 4% cash back on all gas purchases, up to $7,000 in gas purchases per year, and 1% after that. It has no annual fee with your paid Costco membership. At ToP, we generally prefer transferable currencies in favor of cash back. But for those looking for straight cash back, this card is worth a look.

Amex Hilton Surpass
This card earns 6x at gas stations with no annual cap, and has a $95 annual fee. This card also earns a Hilton free Weekend Night Certificate when you spend $15,000 on the card in a calendar year. If you hit the $15,000 spend for a certificate through with gas station purchases, you will end up with a lot of Hilton points to pair with that certificate!

Amex Blue Cash Preferred
This card earns unlimited 3% cash back at gas stations, and has a $95 annual fee.

Citi Custom Cash
This card earns 5x points on up to $500 on the highest spend category each month, one of which is gas stations. This means you can earn 5x on gas stations on up to $6,000 in spend per year.

Quarterly Bonus Cards
The Chase Freedom Flex and Discover It, both with no annual fee, regularly (at least one quarter per year) offer 5% cash back at gas stations on up to $1,500 spend per quarter.

Business Credit Cards

Amex Business Gold
This card earns 4x on the two highest spend categories each month, one of which is gas stations. You earn 4x on up to $150,000 in purchases each year. The annual fee is $295.

Amex Blue Business Preferred
One of the best business cards on the market, this no annual fee card earns 2x on all purchases, up to $50,000 spend per year.

Chase Ink Cash
This card earns 2x URs on all gas purchases with no annual cap, and has no annual fee.

Final Thoughts

There are lots of great options for purchasing gas (and things sold inside “gas” stations, even if it doesn’t have fuel pumps out front). However, for most folks, it does not make sense to open ANY credit card to maximize gas purchases. The annual spend just doesn’t justify a credit pull or another annual fee. Rather, you should decide which of your next cards is a good card for fuel purchases, in addition to other reasons for signing up for that card.
