ToP Credit Cards For Gas Spend
Whether you’re filling the tank, grabbing a new charging cable for the road or ToPping off the kids' snacks for that big trip, nearly everyone has some monthly charges at gas stations. This valuable earning category isn’t just limited to paying at the pump, but typically also includes any items purchased inside attached stores. Just think of all those hidden treasures you’ve found at a gas station. (Slurpee, anyone?) If you aren’t using those purchases toward a new card bonus, here are some of the strongest ways to fuel your earnings at the pump below.

The Newest Earners On The Block
Just within the last week-and-a-half, a couple of great new opportunities have surfaced for earning extra rewards on gas. Whether you’re hoping to use that fuel purchase to pump up your balance of transferable points or looking toward higher multipliers with cobranded cards, here are some of the newer (or recently updated) ToP credit cards for gas spend.
Chase Sapphire Preferred
With the latest refresh of the popular cornerstone starter card, Chase has added gas stations and EV charging as an eligible 3x-earning category on the Chase Sapphire Preferred. The new category also includes Costco gas stations, which are often excluded from other banks. There is no limit on annual spend with this card, so it’s quickly become a ToP option to fuel the fun.
Wyndham Earner Premier (Plus refreshed Wyndham Earner Plus + Wyndham Earner Business cards)
These newly released and revamped hotel cards are making waves with some higher-earning categories. Both personal cards listed earn 4x Wyndham Rewards Points on purchases that code as travel. (The great news here is that Barclays determined that gas stations and EV charging are considered travel purchases.) While the business card's gas earnings decreased from their former 8x earning rate, the card's now 5x earnings are still industry-leading.

Solid Standbys: 4x-5x Earners
Some of the longstanding ToP credit cards for gas spend offer opportunities to earn 4x or 5x on gas station pruchases:
American Express Business Gold
This powerful card awards 4x Membership Rewards points for each $1 spent in your ToP two categories each billing cycle. Among a few other great options, you’ll find gas stations listed for that 4x earning up to $150,000 annually (combined).
American Express Hilton Surpass and American Express Hilton Honors
Hilton wants a place at the pump and offers 5x earnings on the no-annual-fee Honors card or a high-octane 6x with the Surpass card. This spend also earns toward the annual free night certificate after $15,000 spent on the Surpass card, so it can be a nice way to earn points and a great night away.
Chase IHG Premier and Chase IHG Premier Business
Both cards earn 5x on all purchases at eligible gas stations. Those points go even further when coupled with IHG’s 4th night free on award stays. This global hotel program has a sprawling footprint, making it likely to have an option at more destinations worldwide. The no-annual-fee IHG Traveler almost keeps pace with 3x earnings at gas stations.
Citi Strata Premier
Citi has added gas stations as a 3x bonus category for its Premier card. This card earns ThankYou Points, which are highly sought after for their ability to transfer to partners like American Airlines. You can pair it with the Citi Custom Cash (no longer available to new applicants)—which earns 5x (on up to $500 monthly) on your ToP spend category—for a powerful duo.
Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express and Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card
Bonvoy cards are issued by both American Express and Chase. While the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card earns 3x Bonvoy points per $1 spent, the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express edges out the earnings race with 4x.
Wells Fargo Autograph
This $0 annual fee card can be a great option for high-gas spenders. With no annual caps on earnings, the Wells Fargo Autograph earns 3x transferable points on dining, travel, transit, streaming, phone services, and of course, gas stations and EV charging. With an ever-growing list of transfer partners, this option is starting to get our attention.

A Pit Maneuver: Another Way To Earn 5x On Gas
One of our favorite methods to earn on gas is with the no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex and original Freedom Visa. Both cards offer rotating 5x earning categories that change each quarter. We often see gas stations added to the list, which allows cardholders to earn 5x on up to $1,500 in combined purchases. With up to 7,500 points on offer from each card you hold, this is why we encourage never closing Freedom cards—and why we'd recommend downgrading the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve cards rather than closing. The more of these cards you hold, the more options you have for earning during a lucrative quarter. Our downgrade guide walks through how to change your card to one of these powerful earners.
