Delta 20-Minute Bag Guarantee

This week, I had one of those travel days that starts when it’s still dark outside early in the AM … and ends when it’s dark outside early in the AM the next day. In those scenarios, all you want to do is get home. Not sit around a checked bag carousel for who-knows-how-long. I was thankfully flying Delta Air Lines, which has a policy that stands out here. Delta promises to deliver passengers their bags within 20 minutes. And if it’s any slower than that, the carrier issues travelers a one-time 2,500-mile bonus. It could not be easier to submit one of these claims. But Delta expects customers to be quick, too. It updated the policy last month, now requiring forms to be filed within 2 hours of arrival. (Previously, customers were afforded a 3-day window.) Here’s how to use the Delta 20-Minute Bag Guarantee in 2026. (Image courtesy Delta Air Lines)

How It Works

Delta uses an internal tracking system to clock bags' travel time. It starts ticking with the aircraft’s arrival at the gate, and it stops when the luggage hits the belt. When the plane pulls up to the gate, start a timer on your phone. If 20 minutes elapse and suitcases are still not on the carousel, you're likely eligible for 2,500 miles. Head to delta.com/bagsontime to fill out the easy Delta 20-Minute Bag Guarantee form with your name, SkyMiles number and flight info. You can do this on your phone or laptop. Just make sure to file it within two hours of landing.

Delta 20-Minute Bag Guarantee

It took about 24 minutes for my and P2's bags to arrive on our flight this week. Since it was a late night and the 2-hour clock was moving, we decided to sit in the airport and submit our claims on our phones then and there. The forms only take about 60 seconds to fill out. Both of our claims were approved instantly, and the miles were immediately deposited in our accounts. (Though Delta’s terms say it can take up to two weeks for them to post.)

Key Rules To Know

Here are some important terms and conditions to note about the Delta 20-Minute Bag Guarantee.

  • It's only valid on domestic flights (within the U.S. 50 states and Puerto Rico), not international.
  • Flights must be marketed and operated by Delta Air Lines and Delta Connection carriers. However, codeshare flights are eligible as well, as long as the final leg is marketed and operated by Delta.
  • You must be a SkyMiles member at the time of travel, with your SkyMiles number included on the reservation.
  • Forms must be submitted within 2 hours of the flight’s completion. A request must be submitted via delta.com/bagsontime. Customers are limited to one claim per trip, regardless of the number of checked bags. Requests for multiple trips must be submitted individually. Oversize and overweight baggage and special items are not eligible.
  • Bonus miles don’t count toward Medallion qualification or Million Miler status.
  • The policy may not apply when Delta faces “conditions out of (its) control,” such as an airport baggage system malfunction, severe weather or other issue.
  • Only valid on paid tickets for published fares. (Which means it's not valid for those traveling on employee pass privileges or employees of other airlines traveling on industry discounted tickets.)

Do Other Airlines Offer Similar Guarantees?

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines also offer 20-minute bag guarantees with pretty similar terms to the Delta 20-Minute Bag Guarantee. The filing process is different, though.

Here are the terms to know:

  • Bags are tracked from the time of your plane's arrival at the gate and when the luggage reaches baggage claim.
  • The airlines also have a 2-hour window to submit your claim, but it must be done at the baggage office. Speak with one of the agents at the airport to file your claim.
  • Successful claims will award 2,500 Atmos Rewards bonus points or a $25 discount code for use on a future Alaska or Hawaiian flight.
  • The policy is valid on flights operated by Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air and SkyWest. It's not valid on international flights requiring customs clearance or to/from Dutch Harbor (DUT).
  • Oversize or special items are excluded (such as pets, golf clubs, skis, surfboards, assistive devices and firearms).
  • Offer is not valid for non-revenue space available travelers, including employees and their dependents, guest pass travelers and employees of other airlines traveling on industry discounted tickets.
  • The policy may not apply in the event of conditions out of the airlines' control, including airport baggage system malfunctions, severe weather or other issues.
  • One claim can be submitted per guest, per flight, regardless of the number of checked bags.
  • Points will post within 3 days.

Delta 20-Minute Bag Guarantee: ToP Thoughts

Even with Delta's recent shortening of the window when customers are eligible to submit a claim, this is a still a generous policy. Hopefully it helps move along the whole bag claim process. And when it doesn't, an extra 2,500 miles is not a bad exchange for your time. The process for submitting a claim is as easy it gets—you just have to remember to file it fast.
