Citi Adds Japan Airlines
You've probably heard talk about all the Japan Airlines miles floating around these days in award travelers' accounts. Well, there are about to be even more. As of today, September 20, Citi adds Japan Airlines. The standard transfer ratio will be 1:1 for those who hold a Citi card with an annual fee (such as the Citi Strata Premier℠ or the Citi Strata Elite℠). This marks the fourth new transfer partnership for Japan Airlines in just the last year and a half, beginning with Bilt Rewards in May 2025, followed by Capital One in September 2025 and then Rove Miles in March 2026. This is great news for those with ThankYou Points.
Citi's Newest Transfer Partner
Citi ThankYou is expanding its airline transfer partner network to include Japan Airlines. Citi cites the popularity of Tokyo travel as the catalyst for the addition. The city ranks as Citi Travel's top-booked international destination and third most-booked destination overall, according to a press release. As Citi adds Japan Airlines, the standard transfer rates will be as follows, depending on the Citi cards you hold:
- Eligible annual-fee cardholders: Transfers will be at a 1:1 ratio, with 1,000 ThankYou Points = 1,000 JAL miles.
- Eligible no-annual-fee cardholders: Transfers will be at a 1:0.7 ratio, with 1,000 ThankYou Points = 700 JAL miles.
Transfer Bonus
As Citi adds Japan Airlines, it is running a promotion to celebrate the launch. From September 20 through October 24, cardholders can score a limited-time 30% transfer bonus. The bonused transfer ratios are:
- Eligible annual-fee cardmembers: Bonused transfers will be at a 1:1.3 ratio, with 1,000 ThankYou Points = 1,300 JAL miles.
- Eligible no-annual-fee cardmembers: Bonused transfers will be at a 1:0.91 ratio, with 1,000 ThankYou Points = 910 JAL miles.
JAL miles are valid for 36 months. It's best to nail down a redemption rather than speculatively transferring points. Even with an amazing bonus like this, you don't want to end up with stranded or expiring miles later.
Citi Adds Japan Airlines: ToP Thoughts
Japan continues to be a wildly popular destination, and Japan Airlines is an awesome way to get there. Business class seats from the U.S. to Japan start at just 55,000 JAL miles per person. The news that Citi adds Japan Airlines means that if you find one of those seats during the bonus period, you'll only need to transfer 43,000 ThankYou Points to book it. That's an incredible value.
