Amex Welcome Offer Delay
Until recently, it had been a very long time since I received an Amex ‘no lifetime language' offer. When you've been in this hobby for a while, and opened and closed a lot of cards over time, these offers seem to dry up. But when I recently created a new LLC, new offers started to arrive. First, a Business Platinum offer for 200,000 Membership Rewards if I spent $20,000 in 3 months. Next, a Business Platinum offer for 250,000 Membership Rewards if I spent $20,000 in 3 months. This one really caught my eye, and I jumped at the chance! But I had no idea this would lead to an Amex Welcome Offer delay and the start of a nervous 3 month wait.
The Backstory
If you're not familiar with Amex ‘no lifetime language' offers (“NLL”), let me explain. American Express typically has a rule that says you are only eligible for a welcome offer on a specific card type once, period. This is written in the offer terms when you see a card offer available publicly. The language usually reads: “You may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this Card or previous versions of this Card.”
Lately, however, Amex has been sending out targeted offers that are noticeably missing this language. This means you can earn the bonus again. We call these offers “no lifetime language” or NLL offers.
Typically, whether you have an NLL offer or a regular offer, you can expect your Amex welcome offer bonus points to post to your account quickly. My personal experience has been that these bonuses will post within a few days of meeting the spend at the earliest, or within a few days of the statement cutting at the latest. You can read more about the typical timing of an Amex welcome offer in this article.

My Experience
On St. Patrick's Day, I tried my luck with this 250,000 points offer and was instantly approved. I started using my card right away, and thanks (or not) to some estimated tax payments owed in April, I was able to easily meet the minimum spend requirement. In my past experiences with Amex, my welcome offer posts as soon as I meet the spend. Or at the latest, as soon the statement cuts and I make a payment. I spent over the $20,000 and no bonus. My statement cut and no bonus. I paid the statement balance and no bonus.
I was starting to get nervous. We were on a trip, but I had some time on my hands, so I chatted Amex to ask about my bonus. The first question they asked was for a copy of the offer I received. Of course. It was at home on my desk more than 3,000 miles away. It would have to wait.
A few days after I returned home, I had some time to chat with Amex again. I mentioned that I had the documentation to submit that they requested. They sent me a link to upload the documents which I did. Fortunately, I had received this offer in the mail and had kept the offer! The representative told me it would take 2-4 weeks for a response. As luck would have it, I didn't have to wait that long.
A week and a half later, I checked my Amex account and my bonus had posted overnight! I didn't receive an email or any sort of notification, just a deposit of 250,000 Membership Rewards. Whew!
Here's an overview of the full timeline:
- March 17, 2026 application and approval
- April 15, 2026 $20,000 minimum spend requirement met
- April 20, 2026 payment made for full balance

- May 6, 2026 I initially reached out to Amex about the missing bonus
- May 26, 2026 I reached out to Amex again and uploaded the welcome offer documents
- June 5, 2026 my welcome bonus points posted to my account
Amex Welcome Offer Delay: ToP Thoughts
A few lessons learned from this experience: Number 1: Keep your documents. Especially with targeted offers like this, make sure you keep a record. I am 100% sure being able to provide a copy of my targeted offer this is what solved my issue. Number 2: Don't trust the bank to get it right automatically. I'm busy. I have a lot of things going on. But I knew I had more than met the spend and I knew something wasn't right. I followed up well before the bonus period ended anyway, just in case I needed more spend.
There were too many points at stake and too much spend that I had purposefully diverted to risk not earning this bonus. I was prepared for a bigger fight if I needed to face it. But ultimately, what saved the day was being proactive and keeping track of my offer. While I hope nobody reading this has a similar issue, a few extra minutes of preparation and follow-up can make sure you get the bonus you expect.
