American Express Rewards Checking Transfer Issue

The American Express Rewards Checking has been pretty popular since it launched. Especially with 30K – 60K bonuses for signing up for an account. These offers are often paired with a no lifetime language Amex Business card welcome offer as well, which is a nice one two punch. I wanted to share something we learned in the ToP Facebook Group that deals with these accounts. There is an American Express rewards checking transfer issue that people should be aware of so they don't cost themselves points.

Where Is The Problem?

The problem is that if you go to transfer points from your Amex Rewards Checking account they will not show any active transfer bonuses. There must be a glitch in the Amex matrix! At first I figured this was for people that had only an Amex Rewards Checking account and that is where all their Membership Rewards came from but you shouldn't even be able to transfer the points if that is the case. It is much trickier than that though.

If you have a Membership Rewards earning card the MRs from your checking account and credit cards should just pool together in one pot, and they do. It is logical to assume that they would all work the same way but they unfortunately don't. It depends which card or account you access the transfer page from that deciphers what is available to you.

American Express Rewards Checking Transfer Issue

I logged into my American Express account and pulled up my business checking account and went to transfer points (pictured above). It showed every available transfer partner but no active transfer bonuses. Someone who isn't aware of the current bonus list may think nothing of this and go ahead and process their transfer. But, if I switched the Membership Rewards earning credit card in the upper right of the screen the list showed the current transfer bonuses.

American Express Rewards Checking Transfer Issue: ToP Thoughts

The key takeaway for this American Express Rewards Checking transfer issue is to go to process transfers from a credit card account and not from the checking account. I think that will be the case for people naturally most of the time anyway. If you have an Amex business checking account be sure to pay extra attention when doing transfers. You don't want to make a mistake and miss out on a transfer bonus after all, that could cost you tens of thousands of points.
