There is an Resy Amex Platinum offer that could be of interest to some out there. That is because it comes with a large welcome offer, plus the ability to earn up to 15x on dining purchases as well. That could be best offer available to you, but there are a few things you need to consider first. Let's take a look at this offer from Resy, and discuss who this may make sense for. Most importantly, remember that this is an OVER 5/24 card AND there are family rules with American Express to be aware of.

Here are the details of this Resy Amex Platinum offer:

• Earn 100,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $8,000 on purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership.
• Plus earn a total of (up to) 15x points at restaurants worldwide on up to $25,000 in eligible purchases on your new Card during your first 6 months of Card Membership.
• The $695 annual fee is NOT waived

There is a chance that the offer will only show 10x dining for you. I encourage you to try different browsers, devices and even WiFi networks to shoot for the 15x dining offer. It may take some work, but many have been able to pull it off.

Amex Platinum Earning Structure

The Resy Amex Platinum offer is a great one, but what about earning on your spend? Here is the card's earning structure:

• 5x points for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel
  • On up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year
• 5x points on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel.
• 1x on all other eligible charges

Application Rules

If you choose to apply, remember that Amex typically will not approve you for more than two Amex credit cards during a 90-day period. They also have a 10 card limit on the colored Membership Rewards earning cards (of which this is one). Those numbers include personal and business cards. This is separate from the 5 card limit on credit cards.

Amex also has a once per lifetime welcome offer rule on each card. This is more like every 5 – 7 years in reality though, and not actually your lifetime. That timeline is based off of when you last held a card, not when you last earned a welcome offer on the product though. If you are ineligible for the welcome offer for any reason American Express will usually let you know that with a pop-up before the application is processed. You can cancel the application at this time with no hard pull.

Who This Offer Makes Sense For & Who It Doesn't

On the surface, this offer Resy Amex Platinum offer is massive. It is the biggest available offer out there in terms of bonus points. If you were able to maximize the 15x on $25,000 in dining purchases, then you would end up with 475,000 Membership Rewards points at the end of the day. Just look at that number – unthinkable. A half a million points from one welcome offer, even if it requires $25K in spend.

The problem is that most people won't be able to spend $25,000 on dining within 6 months. Unless you have a big party upcoming that you can charge (time to get married?), then this decision will require some mathing. Why? Because there is another pretty dang good offer worth 175,000 Membership Rewards points after just $8,000 in spend.

The same $8,000 in spend would get you 100K with the Resy Amex Platinum offer, or 175K with the reader referral offer. The difference would be 75K in bonus points, but you still have the 15x dining spend to consider.

• If both $8,000 minimum spends were done on non restaurant purchases then you would need to spend $5,000 on restaurants over 6 months to make up the 75K shortfall.
  • That is $833.33 a month in dining spend. Not insurmountable, but it will be too much for many.
• Let's say you have a big party etc. and half of the $8K in spend is done on dining. That would leave you leave you only 15K short on the points end.
  • That is only $1,000 more in spend on dining over the remaining months to hit break even.
• If you can spend the full $8K in dining for the welcome offer, then you are already 45K to the good overall.

When it all comes down to it, you need to spend more than $5,000 at restaurants with the 15x earning to come out ahead versus the referral offer. The more of the dining spend you can do during the $8,000 minimum spend period the better. That will be easily achievable for some, but will be a non-starter for others.

Look at your normal dining spending for the last 6 months and see where you fall on this spectrum before diving in.

This Resy Amex Platinum offer is phenomenal if you can get the 15x on dining to show up. Having said that, the 175K offer available via referral will still make more sense for many. You will need to look at your spending patterns over the last 6 months and see which works better for you.
