Resy Amex Gold Offer

Yesterday I dropped some info on an absolutely monster offer from Resy for the Amex Platinum card. If you clicked through to the landing page then you might have noticed the Resy Amex Gold offer is available too. At first glance it looks pretty juicy. A bonus that is above the 60K public offer PLUS a chance to get 20% back on your dining purchases for a year. What's not to like? Time to get those pencils and erasers out!

Details Of The Offer

Let's take a look at the details for this Resy Amex Gold offer:

  • Earn 75,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $6,000 on eligible purchases with your Card in the first 6 months of Card Membership.
  • Plus get 20% back as a statement credit at restaurants worldwide, up to $350 back, during the first 12 months of Card Membership.
    • Maximum of $1750 in dining spend over the first 12 months
  • The $325 annual fee is NOT waived

There is a chance that the offer will only show a cap of $250 in credits for dining. I encourage you to try different browsers, devices and even WiFi networks to shoot for the $350 statement credit cap dining offer. It may take some work, but many have been able to pull it off. It looks like different areas are targeted better, so try when you go into a major city etc. on trips or out to eat if interested.

Things To Remember For Either Offer I Talk About

Due to the new family rule, you should follow our application guidance found here for American Express cards. The order of Amex Membership Rewards applications now matters, and you need to strategize what card to open and when! Grabbing this before the Amex Green card could eliminate that bonus offer as options in the future.

This is also an over 5/24 card, since it will add to your 5/24 count. It is also a card that is easily obtainable when over 5/24. If you are looking to get into Membership Rewards then the Gold Business card could be a better fit for you until you go over 5/24.

Why This Offer Is Fool's Gold

I am not even going to take the time to give you all of the Amex Gold's card perks or earning structure. Because this offer is a pass for the vast majority of people, and the offer that proves this point has all of that info already.

While the Resy Amex Gold offer is far superior to the public offer for this card (of only 60K) it is not the best offer available. If you have been following along with ToP for a while then you know we have given away over 15,000,000 points to readers and ToP Facebook Group members thanks to personal referrals. One of those increased refer a friend offers is for the Amex Gold card. Let's take a look at that offer specifically for a second:

  • Earn 90,000 – 100,000 Membership Rewards® Points after you spend $6,000 on eligible purchases with your new Card within the first 6 months of Card Membership.
    • You don't know exactly what you will get until you fill out the information, but they tell you before you submit the application
  • Info about this offer can be found here.

When comparing the 2 offers you will notice that the Resy Amex Offer comes in 15,000 – 25,000 Membership Rewards points lower than the refer a friend offer. That is before you consider whether or not your significant other has this referral offer available in their account. If they did then you could earn bonus referral points for that as well. That makes this an easy decision with those extra 25K – 30K referral points hitting your account too.

Resy Amex Gold Offer
If Targeted For The 100K Amex Gold Referral Offer

Let's assume that you don't have that referral offer available, and need to use a reader referral instead. That means you would be giving up 25,000 Membership Rewards for a shot at $350 in statement credits (if you can get the higher offer to appear for both offers). Giving up 25K in points for $350 is a value of 1.4 cents per Membership Rewards point. That falls below what a lot of people value Membership Rewards points at, and the $350 in statement credit may require additional spend outside of the welcome offer too. If you can only get the $250 statement credit offer to show the points value drops to 1 cent per point.

If Targeted For The 90K Amex Gold Referral Offer

What if you are only targeted for the 90K referral offer? The numbers look a bit different, since it is only 15,000 more points. In that case the points would have a value of 2.33 cents per point if targeted for the $350 statement credit offer. If you can only get the $250 back in statement credits offer to show the valuation drops to 1.67 cents per point.

Why None Of The Math May Matter For You

Where this may not make a difference is if you are swimming in Membership Rewards points and would rather have cash back. At that point, anything above 1.1 cents per point (the value of the Schwab Platinum cash out) may be of value to you.

Resy Amex Gold Offer: ToP Thoughts

While the Resy Amex Gold offer looks like a beautifully wrapped present, it could be a lump of coal (or fool's gold) once you open it. It all depends on what you are able to get targeted for, and what your end goals are. I think most people will find taking the larger points offer, with a lower required spend, to be the better overall deal for them. As always, it is important for you to crunch your own numbers for your own situation though. We give advice based on what is best for most, but that may not be what lines up best for you.
