Dell Canceled Orders

You have all heard this before, yet here I am again. You may remember my issues with Dell canceled orders that I wrote about previously. Maybe you missed my write up but you read Brian's article sharing his story. It looks like nothing has improved and it has even gotten worse! This time Dell has upped their game with the stories and reasons given for all these Dell canceled orders. It seems like Dell doesn't want our money, nor do they want us to order from them at all.

Why Am I Shopping at Dell?

First, we need to revisit why we are all shopping at Dell and why some us have Dell canceled orders. The American Express Business Platinum card gives you what is basically a coupon book for that credit card. This comes in the form of credits you can use to offset the high $695 annual fee. One of those happens to be a $200 Dell credit twice a year. This means you get $200 to use at Dell from January through June and another $200 to use from July through December. If you have been following along, then you know that you will need to order two times minimum if you only have one American Express Business Platinum card. Have two? now that's potentially four orders. These numbers will come in to play later in this saga.

My 2023 Orders

As mentioned, I have run into issues with Dell canceled orders issue before. I admit that in the past I created new accounts as a workaround to avoid their customer service. I was able to get through most of 2023 without any issues. In fact, I placed five rounds of orders in total for the first half of the year, all for personal use:

  • April 2023: Portable power bank $76
  • June 2023: QuickBooks software $135
  • June 2023: Webcam $91
  • June 2023: Portable battery charger $43
  • June 2023: Camera stand $76

In the second half of the year, I only placed three orders.

  • July 2023: Arcade game $229.99
  • October 2023: Laptop $305.71
  • November 2023: Three items (headphones and phone chargers) $331.04

That was the extent of my orders in 2023.

Dell Order Issues Resurfaced in 2024

In 2024, I relocated and was establishing a new home office and required an improved home Wi-Fi system. After looking around, I discovered that Dell had one that perfectly fit my needs. I considered myself lucky, but that was until my order was promptly canceled.

My first step was to reach out and speak with Dell. I used the chat feature and was told that it was because of the recent address change. I was also advised that I needed to contact the verification department. UGH, I've been down this path before!

While on the chat, the agent put together an order for me and sent me an order quote. I have had them do this before and the orders usually go through when you add in this step. The downside of doing orders this way is that you don't get to pair up the purchase with a shopping portal like Rakuten. As my luck would have it, this quoted order was also canceled.

So having chatted once, I decided to try the phone instead and I called the verification line. I was told they could not help me and there was a different number I needed to call. He seemed to go back and forth on reasoning, but stated I needed a different verification line.

This seemed to come up as soon as I mentioned the American Express Business Platinum card. The agent even said I couldn't make a business purchases at one point. He, as well as everyone I spoke to, seemed to have no idea about the American Express partnership.

Then at one point he mentioned reselling. That is when I pushed this rep pretty hard to include asking him if he had ever bought eight items from a store before. Additionally, I asked what is the resell market for a portable battery charger? I asked what I resold from the list? No rep could give me an answer. It seemed like they were simply reading off a script but could not answer the questions I had.

I have given up on Dell in 2024. I have never seen a company that does not want customers to buy things from them like Dell. In fact, I have now canceled two Business Platinum cards over this issue. Both times I told both American Express reps that these Dell issues were the reason I was canceling the cards. Both times they seemed shocked, yet had no answers other than they would submit feedback. I am definitely one that would be excited for these credits to end, as some have speculated.
