Hilton Surpass Retention Offer
The beginning of the year is always an exciting time. New goals, a fresh start and a reset of spending bonuses on our credit cards! One such card is the Hilton Surpass card, and its free night certificate after $15,000 in spend that resets each year. I love racking up Hilton Honors points with this card, and the free night certificate is kind of like earning double the normal points. This year, it is even better than usual though, and that is because of my excellent Hilton Surpass retention offer. This offer even allows me to pull off a bit of a quadruple dip too. Let's get into it.

Hilton Surpass Retention Offer Details
Here are the terms of my Hilton Surpass retention offer:
- Earn 60,000 Hilton Honors after spending $3,000 within 3 months of accepting the offer.
- Must keep the account open at least 12 months from the time of acceptance or risk having the points removed.
The mini side bonus of all of this is that my annual fee is still $95 for the next year. That is even with the recent changes already added to the card. Which means it should be a negative cost card if I am able to maximize just half of the new perks.
The Timing Of This Is Perfect
The Hilton Surpass is a card I have had for a long time now, and one I never planned on actually closing. Even if you don't plan on cancelling the card you should always check and see if there is a retention offer. You don't need to wait for your annual fee to post either. You can ask any time after your first twelve months of card membership really. American Express will likely only give you one retention offer every 12 – 24 months. That is per card account not across all cards.
It just so happened that my annual fee hit at the end of the year, which lined up perfectly for a quadruple dip. That is because my $15K free night cert spend resets today, which means that all of the Hilton Surpass retention offer spend will count towards it.
If you haven't checked for a retention offer on your Surpass card for a bit, I would reach out on Amex Chat and see if you can get an offer. The retention team works normal business hours during the week on Amex Chat.
Lining Up The Quadruple Dip
For a second there I thought my Hilton Surpass retention offer would open up a quintuple dip chance. Rarified air right there! That was before I remembered that the Hilton Amex Offer for bonus points was on my Hilton Business card and not the Surpass. Here is the break down on my quadruple dip though:
- First dip– complete the spend in the 6x bonus earning category
- This includes restaurants, grocery and gas.
- Second dip– take advantage of the authorized user bonus I just got towards the card.
- Earn 5,000 bonus points after spending $1,000. I can do it for up to 4 authorized users.
- Third dip– finish up this Hilton Surpass retention offer.
- Fourth dip – complete the $15K in spend for the free night certificate after all of this spend counts towards it.
What Will All Of This Get Me?
This is what it would look like if I were able to complete all $15,000 in spend in the 6x categories:
- 90,000 points from $15,000 in spend at 6x earning
- 20,000 points from the authorized user bonuses
- 60,000 points from the retention offer
- A free night certificate worth up to 110,000 points
If I say the free night certificate will get me at least a 70,000 point night in a Hilton hotel (to be on the safe side of value since they are worth up to 120K) the total haul would essentially be 240,000 Hilton Honors points. If we value those points at $0.0045 each that is a return of $1,080 in value on average. When we compare that to the $15,000 in spend it is a return of 7.2%. Talk about a really good return for a non welcome offer card.
Even if I completed all of the $15,000 in spend at the base 3x earning level, that would be a net return of 195,000 points, or 5.85%.
Hilton Surpass Retention Offer: ToP Thoughts
This Hilton Surpass retention offer is a pretty great one no matter what time of year it came. The fact that it lined up with the beginning of the year, and with a new authorized user bonus, makes it all the more sweet though. It may be worth reaching out to American Express to see if you can get something similar.
I was already planning on keeping the card long term, since I like the new changes for the Surpass. Even if Hilton has become my third favorite hotel program now, I still find it useful to have a stash of their points. A few free night certificates here and there are icing on the cake too. This deal alone should give me a nice Hilton Honors points cushion for 2024.
