Hyatt Mr. & Mrs. Smith Gift Card Promo
Hyatt acquired Mr. & Mrs. Smith earlier this year in another move to increase its footprint. World of Hyatt members will eventually be able to redeem points for and earn elite night credits and points from staying at Mr. & Mrs. Smith properties. But that is still in the works as Hyatt works to integrate its new acquisition. In the meantime, Hyatt has launched an interesting Mr. & Mrs. Smith gift card promo for World of Hyatt members that can help with reaching Globalist status.

Through March 31, 2024, World of Hyatt members earn five base points for every $1 spent for eligible Mr. & Mrs. Smith gift cards purchased through Hyatt, and 1 tier qualifying night credit toward Hyatt status for every $300 spent. This second part is what we really care about. To qualify, purchases must be made through the Mr. & Mrs. Smith website.
Some terms to keep in mind:
- Each gift card has a maximum value of $1,000. Multiple gift cards can be purchased, but the maximum amount that can be purchased each day is $10,000.
- Gift card denominations are $100, $200, $500, $1,000.
- The gift cards purchased with this offer don’t expire
- Gift cards are redeemable for stays at hotels and villas in the Mr. & Mrs. Smith collection when booking directly via Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
- Gift cards can only be used to pay for room rate, and not to pay for any incidental spending on property
- Stays booked with these gift cards will not earn World of Hyatt points or elite nights.
The terms also state that “Bonus Points as a cardmember will be awarded” for gift card purchases. I am curious as to whether these gift cards will really code as Hyatt purchases.
Hyatt Mr. & Mrs. Smith Gift Card Promo: An Opportunity to Buy Globalist Status
Glancing at the numbers, I realized this can be a quirky way to buy your way to top tier Globalist status. With just under 2 months left to qualify, some folks might need a little boost to get over the 60 elite nights requirement.
Below I will crunch the numbers to show this offer can help you reach Globalist status by buying Mr. & Mrs. Smith gift cards in increments of $300. You cannot actually buy in increments of $300, but they sell them in many different increments that the math still works out.
Having the World of Hyatt Business credit card or the personal World of Hyatt credit card helps a lot here. Ideally, you can use them both, as we explain below. But I will also do the math without either of these cards for those who haven't opened them yet.
Reaching Globalist Through Mr. & Mrs. Smith Gift Cards
If you were to start from zero elite nights, you would need to buy $18,000 in Mr. & Mrs. Smith gift cards to reach 60 elite nights. That's obviously a lot, even after considering that you're ending up with usable gift cards and not just buying the status outright. Obviously, this play will be more useful for those that just need a little help reaching 60 nights.
The Hyatt cards can help here, especially the personal card. The personal World of Hyatt card earns 2 elite nights for every $5,000 in purchases. And the World of Hyatt Business card earns 5 elite nights for every $10,000 in purchases. This means that with either or both you can end up spending less than $18,000 in gift cards to reach Globalist. Let's see how.
Option 1 – Having only the personal World of Hyatt card
If you only have the World of Hyatt personal card, you would need to spend $15,000 in Mr. & Mrs. Smith gift cards. You will earn 2 elite nights for every $5,000 spent. Also, the card gives you 5 elite nights every year from just having the card. Here is the math:
- 0 nights to start
- 5 nights from holding the personal card
- 5 nights
- Buying $15,000 in gift cards earns you 55 elite nights ($15,000 / $300 = 50)
- 55 nights
- You will earn 6 elite nights from having spent $15,000 on your personal card. (If you spend $14,700 (49 x $300) you will fall short of earning 6 elite nights, so you actually need to spend an even $15,000, which will net you one extra elite night credit.)
- 61 nights = Globalist!
Option 2 – Having only the World of Hyatt Business card
If you only have the personal card, you would need to spend $16,500 in gift cards. Having the Business card is not as helpful as the personal card, since you don't receive any elite night credits from just holding the card. With no elite nights to start, our target is the full 60:
- 0 nights to start
- Buying $16,500 in gift cards earns you 55 elite nights ($16,500 / $300 = 55)
- 55 nights
- You will earn 5 elite nights from having spent $10,000 on your Business card
- 60 nights = Globalist!
Option 3 – Having both the personal and the Business cards
Surprisingly, stacking the two cards requires you to only spend $15,000, which is what you would need if you only had the personal card. I was quite surprised by the fact that having both cards didn't make it any cheaper than just using the personal card. Here is how it works:
- 0 nights to start
- 5 nights from holding the World of Hyatt personal card
- 5 nights
- Buying $10,000 in gift cards with the Business card earns you 33 elite nights ($10,000 / $300 = 33 (rounding down))
- 38 elite nights
- You will earn 5 elite nights from having spent $10,000 on your Business card
- 43 elite nights
- Buying $5,000 in gift cards with the personal card earns you 16 elite nights ($5,000 / $300 = 16 (rounding down))
- 59 elite nights
- You will earn 2 elite nights from having spent $5,000 on your personal card
- 61 nights = Globalist!
Is This Offer Worth It?
Obviously, we're not recommending that you spend tens of thousands of dollars on gift cards to earn Globalist status. I ran the numbers to show what is needed if you're starting from zero, but you can adjust the calculation based on how many nights you're missing.
Also, while spending $15,000 or $16,500 sounds like a lot–and indeed it is–spending your way to status with either Hyatt credit card alone requires a lot more. The Business card requires you to spend $120,000 to earn 60 elite nights. The personal World of Hyatt card requires you to spend $140,000 to earn 60 nights (remember the 5 complimentary elite nights).
So is this offer worth it at all? Is it better than simply mattress running at a couple of cheap Hyatt properties?
The answer is very personal and up to everyone's individual circumstances. This offer allows you to buy unlimited Elite Qualifying Nights for $300 each. While mattress running can technically be “cheaper” because you can achieve it for less than $300 per night, you're still spending money out of pocket. But with the Mr. & Mrs. Smith gift cards, you're exchanging cash for a gift card that can be redeemed at full value. In theory, if you were spending that money anyway, there is no out of pocket cost to these elite nights.
Not everyone has an interest in staying at a Mr. & Mrs. Smith property. Or at least not before they are fully integrated into the World of Hyatt portfolio. But if you are interested in a stay, then you're essentially earning Hyatt elite nights for your future stay.
Hyatt Mr. & Mrs. Smith Gift Card Promo: ToP Thoughts
This is odd gift card offer presents a decent opportunity to buy World of Hyatt Globalist status before the end of the year (or early next year). While I wouldn't suggest using this offer to go from 0 to 60 elite nights, it can be a helpful way to get you across the finish line this year. And you'll still end up with a few Mr. & Mrs. Smith gift cards and an excuse to check out one of their properties before they join the World of Hyatt portfolio. But before diving in, remember to consider whether going after elite status is right for you.
