Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express Review

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express offers bonus cash back on certain categories without having an annual fee. This makes it a good option for those looking to avoid paying an annual fee but still looking to earn some bonus cash back. Most would probably be better grabbing the older sibling of this card, which is more rewarding and has a reasonable annual fee (our review of that card). In this Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express review we will discuss the current welcome offer, card perks, earning structure and share our overall thoughts.

Current Welcome Offer

The current welcome offer for the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express is as follows:

  • Earn a $200 statement credit after $2,000 spend on eligible purchases in 6 months. Terms Apply.
  • This card does not have an annual fee. See Rates and Fees.

American Express Application Rules You Should Be Aware Of

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express is a credit card and not a Pay Over Time card, so it counts towards Amex's limit of five credit cards.

There is also a once per lifetime rule with American Express. That means if you have carried the card in the last 6 or 7 years you will not be eligible for the welcome offer. It does not matter when you last earned the welcome offer, this is based on when you last had an active card on your account.

If you are not eligible for the welcome offer

Amex Application Rules

If you choose to apply, remember that Amex typically will not approve you for more than two Amex credit cards during a 90-day period. They also have a limit of 5 credit cards per person, of which this is one. There is also a 10 card limit on the colored Membership Rewards earning cards (of which this is not one of).

Amex also has a once per lifetime welcome offer rule on each card. This is more like every 5 – 7 years in reality though, and not actually your lifetime. That timeline is based off of when you last held a card, not when you last earned a welcome offer on the product though. If you are ineligible for the welcome offer for any reason American Express will usually let you know that with a pop-up before the application is processed. You can cancel the application at this time with no hard pull.

for any reason then you will be informed at the time of application with the Amex Pop-up. This happens before the application is processed and it will give you a chance to cancel the application if you are not eligible for the welcome offer.

ToP Analysis

The Blue Cash Everyday is a decent cash back card without an annual fee and lots of new perks. The 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets and U.S. gas stations is nice, but where the card really shines is 3% cash back for online retail purchases. While there are exclusions in the “online retail purchases” category, travel being a notable exclusion, it does work for most other types of online retailers, such as Lowe's. Most everyone shops at eligible online retail stores throughout the year and 3% cash back is a nice perk. The downside to these categories is they are capped at $6,000 spend per year. Additionally, it is rare to find a no annual fee card with benefits or credits. But if you maximize this card's new perks, you can receive up to $264 in statement credits every 12 months.

But not all is great with this card. Other than 3 categories, this card earns only 1% cash back.  There are plenty of no annual fee cards that earn higher cash back with no categories to remember. For example, the Citi Double Cash earns 2% cash back on every purchase, not just on a couple of categories.

Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express Review: ToP Thoughts

The Blue Cash Everyday is a no annual fee card with up to $264 per year in statement credits. It earns 3% cash back in 3 categories, including online retail purchases. If you have high spend at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. gas stations, or online retail stores and you subscribe to Home Chef Meal Solutions, this is a great card for your wallet.
