Chase Freedom® FlexSM Credit Card Review

The Chase Freedom® FlexSM replaced Chase Freedom, and it is one of the newer cards in the Chase Ultimate Rewards family. This card is a great earner and one that we recommend you get to fulfill your Chase trifecta. In our Chase Freedom® FlexSM review, we will discuss the current welcome offer, earning structure, card perks, and share our overall thoughts.

Freedom Flex's Current Welcome Offer

The Chase Freedom® FlexSM has the following public welcome offer:

  • Earn $200 or 20,000 Ultimate Rewards after spending $500 within the first three months of card membership
  • The card has no annual fee

Chase Application Rules

Like other Chase cards, you will not qualify for this card if you have opened more than 5 credit cards with any bank in the last 24 months. You also can not receive the welcome offer on this card if you have earned one in the last 24 months. This does not include other Freedom cards. You can carry each Freedom card type at the same time and still get the welcome offer.

Chase Freedom® FlexSM Credit Card Review: Earning Rates

The Chase Freedom® FlexSM  has the following earning structure:

  • 5% (5x) on travel through the Chase travel portal
  • 5% (5x) on different categories each quarter on up to $1,500 in spend each quarter
  • 3% (3x) on dining inclusive of takeout and delivery
  • 3% (3x) on drugstore purchases
  • 1% (1x) on all other eligible purchases
How To Turn Your Cashback Into Ultimate Rewards

While you can earn cash back with the Chase Freedom® FlexSM, you can also use your points for travel.  This is even more valuable if you have one of the following premium Chase cards:

That is because the Chase Freedom® FlexSM is a part of the Chase Ultimate Rewards program allowing you to transfer points between all of your accounts.  Once your points are in an Ultimate Rewards earning account (one of the three cards listed above), you can transfer points 1:1 to a variety of airline and hotel partners.

Chase Freedom Flex Review: Card Perks

The Chase Freedom® FlexSM doesn't come with a ton of meaningful perks, which isn't surprising for a no annual fee card. Most of what it does offer comes from the card's Mastercard World Elite perks.

  • Three months of DoorDash’s DashPass
    • Get $5 off your first order each month
  • 5% back on Lyft rides through March 2025
    • If you take 3 rides with Lyft in a month, you’ll get a $5 credit (once per month) to put towards your next ride.
  • Cell phone insurance
  • ShopRunner membership.

Chase Freedom Flex: ToP Analysis

The Chase Freedom® FlexSM card can be a great addition to your lineup to earn Chase Ultimate Rewards.  Essentially, they took the best feature of the Freedom card, 5% cash back in quarterly bonus categories, and added even more permanent earning categories.  The addition of 3% on drugstores is a great addition as is 3% at restaurants, on par with the more expensive Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire Reserve cards.

Earning potential in the first year can easily reach over 50,000 Ultimate Rewards if you maximize the welcome offer and your quarterly bonus categories. You can easily increase that value by taking advantage of travel, dining or drugstore bonus categories. Any way you look at it, there is serious value here for a no annual fee card, especially when that cash back can be turned into valuable Ultimate Rewards

Chase Freedom® FlexSM Credit Card Review: ToP Thoughts

It is nice to see Chase responding to its customers' needs and offering a very competitive no annual fee card with the Chase Freedom® FlexSM. Even without the welcome offer, this is a great card to have and keep long term.  The Flex continues to be a great earner to top off your Chase Ultimate Reward balance.  It’s hard to imagine a better lineup of earning potential on a card with no annual fee.
