Chase Freedom 5x Earning For Insurance & Tax Prep

It looks like we will be getting a surprise 5x earning category for the Chase Freedom card next March to celebrate the card's 15th birthday. This is in addition to the other 5x categories that have already been announced for the quarter. You can see all of the categories for all 5x earning cards and their activation links here. This was listed as a “surprise” birthday category when the quarterly options were first announced. It appears that Chase has let the cat out of the bag and the surprise will be the addition of insurance and tax prep for the quarter. Here is what it says in the Chase app (HT DDG)

“Starting March 1st through March 31st, you will earn 5% cash back on a birthday surprise category: Tax Preparation & Insurance. Activate by March 14th and earn a total of 5% cash back from January 1st through March 31st, 2025 on up to $1,500 in combined purchases…”

It looks like they should be sending out an email to activate, or set up a landing page etc., some time before March 1st of 2025. The real bummer is that this will co-mingle with the other categories from the quarter. Since this is a birthday celebration, I would have loved to see it have its own 5% earning cap. Especially since many will likely already have maximized their cards by March from grocery alone. On the other hand, if grocery and the other options were not super useful for you, this gives you another bite at the apple.
