ToP Mid-Tier Hotels 2024

Sarah and I spent a lot of nights in hotels in 2024. Like a LOT, a lot. Between all the programs, we had well over 100 nights in hotels, plus others at Airbnbs. Over the course of the year, we saw the good and the bad of budget, mid-tier, and luxury properties. Despite our love of luxury hotels, probably like most of you, we find ourselves in budget and mid-tier hotels much more often than luxury properties. Here is our list of our ToP mid-tier hotels 2024, including a few places where we'll return.

Method to the Madness: How the Rankings Work

Simply stated, there is no rhyme or reason to these rankings of the ToP Mid-Tier Hotels 2024. It is purely subjective. While I occasionally write a detailed review of a hotel and include things like the quality of linens, WiFi, temperature controls, lighting, blackout curtains, quality of toiletries, etc., this list is not meant to be an objective ranking based on these things. However, each of those factors, and many more, help shape my experience in some way. However, the vast majority of my rankings are based on 3 things: the experience, the location, and the ambiance. At one property that might be based solely on interaction with staff, while at another property it is based on our room or the location.

Sarah & Derrick's ToP Mid-Tier Hotels 2024

Without further ado, here are our 5 favorite mid-tier hotels from last year.

Grand Hyatt SFO

A property that we've wanted to visit for quite a while, finally happened in 2024. We visited the Grand Hyatt SFO while on the West Coast Swing. Shameless self-plug here: if you haven't joined us for a City Social or a Meetup, please do in 2025. They are so much fun and it is great to meet other like-minded award travelers in person. Back to the hotel, this property is super cool, as it is connected landside to the airport and you can enter the hotel directly from the AirTrain.

Pros:

Amazing runway and airport terminal views. Bonus points for the hotel supplying binoculars for all the airplane spotting. Breakfast was really well done and free, thanks to Sarah's Globalist status. This hotel is a Hyatt Category 5, meaning it costs between 17,000 and 23,000 Hyatt points per night.

Cons:

Far from downtown, so if you're exploring San Francisco, this is likely not the hotel for you.

Grand Bohemian Lodge Greenville

We visited this property back in March and fell in love with this Marriott Autograph Collection property. From the moment you walk into the lobby and see the giant fireplace, you know it's a fun, vibrant hotel. Overall, the hotel matches the city of Greenville. It is a highly underrated destination and one which we hope to return very soon.

Pros:

Location on the river is excellent for walking around downtown. The rooms are spacious and quiet. The restaurant was great for after dinner drinks, with lots of indoor and outdoor seats seating (outdoor seats with fire pits, too).

Cons:

Breakfast seating was rather cramped, especially for a sold-out weekend in early spring. Marriott Bonvoy points redemptions can be tricky, but with flexibility you can find reasonable cash/points prices.

Marriott Mena House

Quick: name a property where you can stay for $200 or less, 35,000 points or less, and eat breakfast while staring at ancient pyramids? There's not many options, right? Marriott Mena House is one of those and the easiest selection for ToP Mid-Tier Hotels 2024. We booked nights at this property using a 35,000 Free Night Certificate earned from a Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card and loved the property. We were upgraded to a massive suite and the staff were fabulous.

ToP Mid-Tier Hotels 2024
Pros:

Location, location, location. The food at breakfast was fantastic and the staff are very helpful and pleasant. Low points/cash costs make this a fantastic option in Cairo.

Cons:

This property is MASSIVE. If you have mobility issues or restrictions, it may be difficult for you. Rooms are often a 5+ minute brisk walk from the restaurants or the main pool.

Hyatt Regency Tamaya

This is a property that Sarah and I visited during a Covid-era roadtrip in 2021. We loved the property then and vowed to return. We went back for 4 nights in October and thoroughly enjoyed the property again. You can read the full review here.

Pros:

Full-service resort, with multiple golf courses, horseback riding, several pools, etc. Location is perfect if you are visiting the Albuquerque Balloon Festival. The scenery is stunning. A Category 4 property, costing 12,000-18,000 Hyatt points per night, it is one of the few remaining resorts where a Category 1-4 Free Night Certificate works.

Cons:

The resort is a few miles off the main road and a solid 30+ minutes from downtown Albuquerque. If you want to do anything other than stay at the resort the entire time, a car is required.

Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa

A second Egyptian property makes our ToP Mid-Tier Hotels 2024 list: the Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa. We spent 4 glorious days here and it is forever a part of ToP history, as we achieved 100,000 members in our Facebook group. We were celebrating poolside, along with the ToP team scattered across the USA. It was an awesome moment that we'll never forget. But the hotel is also great. The pool and restaurant areas face west and you can catch sunset each night over the Nile River and looking towards the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens. If you have not visited Egypt, I highly recommend you go. Should we ever return to Luxor, this hotel is on our list.

Pros:

The location on the Nile is perfect, however the neighborhood around the hotel is not great for exploring. Cheap cash and points rates, we could book this for 4 nights for around $400 or 100,000 Hilton Honors points in total. The lunch and dinner options were plentiful and delicious. A full buffet breakfast was available for Hilton Diamond members.

Cons:

The guest rooms are dated and small. Our room was dimly lit and had one small window with an angled view. We were also disappointed in the quality and variety of the food offered at the breakfast buffet. While we spent almost all of our time exploring, we did have one afternoon to chill by the pool and it was very difficult to claim four chairs for our party of four.

ToP Mid-Tier Hotels 2024 – ToP Thoughts

We were blessed with another year of crazy travels all over the globe. While we didn't travel to 4 continents in 2024, we got to see many amazing places in North America, Europe and Egypt. It was a fun-filled year of awesome properties and we throughly enjoyed compiling our ToP Mid-Tier Hotels 2024 list, as we relived many of those adventurous in doing so. Here's to another year of great hotels in 2025.
