Southwest Refer A Friend Offer

The Southwest personal cards recently had a pretty tempting increased welcome offer that offered people 85,000 Rapid Rewards points. The public offers for those cards ended at some point today. They are not quite gone forever though, at least not yet. The Southwest refer a friend offers are still increased for the time being.

Offer Details

The Southwest refer a friend offer is still as follows (for now):

  • Earn 85,000 Rapid Rewards after spending $3,000 within the first 3 months
  • The annual fee (varies by personal card) is NOT waived
  • Here is a ToP team member referral in case you don't have one available to you
    • This offer is set to end via referral on 10/17/24

For all of the perks and earning structure on these cards, be sure to check out our Southwest personal card reviews.

Southwest Refer A Friend Offer

Is It Too Soon To Grab One Of These Cards For The Companion Pass?

If you are trying to line up the Companion Pass for almost two years, then you need the welcome offer points to post in the next calendar year. That means that you can not finish the required minimum spend, or even get too close to finishing it, until January 1st of next year. Since you only have 3 months to complete the spend, it is still cutting it a little close with only a week or two of overlap next year.

The timing may be more important for people than the actual welcome offer is. Even at the lower publicly available offer of 50,000 Rapid Rewards points after $1,000 in spend within the first 3 months is enough to get you over the hump. At least when paired with a Southwest Performance Business card early next year.

If you think you can thread the needle on timing then it may be worth grabbing the 35K higher offer before it goes away next week. If you think the timing of it all would be tight, then you are probably better off waiting until mid November etc. to grab the personal card anyway.

Southwest Refer A Friend Offer: ToP Thoughts

It is nice to see the Southwest refer a friend offer stay elevated for another week, especially after we saw the public offers drop today. If you are chasing the Southwest Companion Pass it still may make sense to let this one pass and get a better timing on the process. A lot of that will depend on your ability to hit the required spend, or what remains of it, after January 1st. It will be a tight window versus if you waited another month or so before grabbing the personal card. Waiting will make sense for many, even if it is at a lower welcome offer level.
