American Express just keeps sweetening the pot, this time with a 200,000 Amex Business Platinum referral offer. They seem to be throwing around these Membership Rewards points like Oprah on a giveaway show. And, I'll tell you what, I am here for all of it. Just as those amazing 10x restaurant referral bonuses are ending in steps a large Business Platinum referral offer, but is the offer big enough?
Details Of The Offer
Here are the details for the 200,000 Amex Business Platinum referral offer:
- Earn 200,000 Membership Rewards after you spend $20,000 within the first 3 months of card membership
- The $695 annual fee is NOT waived
I had wished the timeframe for the spend would be longer, or the minimum spend would be the old $15,000 for people, but we struck out on both accords.
Card's Earning Structure
Here is the earning structure for the American Express Business Platinum card:
- 5x Membership Rewards points per dollar on flights and prepaid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com.
- 1.5x Membership Rewards on eligible purchases of over $5,000 (on up to $2 million in purchases per calendar year)
- 1.5x Membership Rewards in the following categories
- U.S. construction material and hardware suppliers
- U.S. electronic goods suppliers and software & cloud system providers
- U.S. shipping providers
- 1x Membership Rewards on other eligible purchases

Is This Referral Offer Good Enough?
It is strange to question a 200K welcome offer, but we need to do just that. Even though this is as high as we have ever seen an Amex Business Platinum referral offer, it still isn't good enough for most. That is because there are still 250K and 300K offers out there if you go digging. I guess if you were at wits end searching for those you could grab this. However, if you are willing to put in the work I would stick with those offers.
There is one instance where it could make sense to pursue this offer. If you, or your significant other, has this 200K offer showing AND has the 10x restaurant referral offer attached (which ends in a few days). That may be worth it, since you would get 20K – 30K bonus points for the referral and then 10x on dining for 3 months. That is probably worth at least another 20K – 30K for most people, which brings you in over the 250K offer. If you spend a lot on restaurants then you can even get up to the 300K level. That is a pretty small needle to thread though. It should also be noted that all of these offers have Amex's once per lifetime language.
200,000 Amex Business Platinum Referral: ToP Thoughts
While it is great to see a 200,000 Amex Business Platinum referral hit our shores, I just don't think it is quite good enough for most. Unless you have given up all hope on searching the 250K and 300K offer, or can pair it up with the 10x restaurant offer too, then I think this is a pass. It is still good to know that it is out there if all of those offers dry up.
