Hyatt Under Canvas Promotion
There is a new Hyatt Under Canvas promotion that could be useful to some, but is a much more niche promo for sure. I wanted to go over the details of the offer, in case you have some use for it, but I also wanted to discuss the predatory marketing that hotel chains have fallen into. This isn't an issue just with World of Hyatt, since almost all of the major brands have done it, but this is a cookie cutter example of it. What they do is roll up every point of earning potential to give an eye busting amount – 20x here – but that isn't in fact the value of the offer. Let's get into it.

My Issue With The Marketing Of This Offer & Others Like It
Here was the email subject line for the Hyatt Under Canvas promotion:
- Register to Earn 20 Total Points Per $1 Spent Glamping
You can see from the picture from the offer landing page that the 20x earning is prominently displayed (I added the red box). That is a gotcha headline though, since 9x of the 20x you would earn no matter what Hyatt hotel you stayed at. That is because 5x earning is available to anyone with a World of Hyatt account attached to their reservation. The other 4x is what World of Hyatt or Hyatt Business cardholders earn on Hyatt stays. These earnings happen whether this promotion is going on or not.
While technically true, and why the can get away with it, this offer is not a 20x earning offer. It is an 11x earning offer, which you can pair up with your normal earning rate. Earning 11x in bonus points doesn't sound as sexy though, does it? Saying 20x instead may get people to dive in thinking they are getting an amazing deal, and lead to them spending more money than they would have otherwise. That is why I don't like it.
Hyatt Under Canvas Promotion: ToP Thoughts
While the Hyatt Under Canvas promotion may be a nice boost for people planning on glamping anyway, it won't be useful to the vast majority of people reading this. I decided to write about it to point out a bigger problem in the loyalty program promotion game, predatory marketing. They pump up the numbers to show the best possible earning option, even though half of it is from stuff you would earn at any of their hotels – not just the promotion hotels. That is deceiving and the intent is to get you excited and chase the deal. The problem is that it is only half as good as promised in reality.
